#whether that's like from friends or family

for a quick upgrade of your own digital security, switch your browser to duckduckgo and switch your texting to signal!
signal is an encrypted messaging platform and offers a lot of additional privacy settings. pretty sure i remember a case where messages sent by a woman seeking an abortion over facebook messenger were used in court, so being mindful about this kind of stuff could be useful. i use signal to message friends and even family. you can even set a pin or password to be able to open signal if youâre trying to maintain privacy between family/people who might be looking through your phone. duckduckgo just has some solid basic commitments to privacy and doesnât track searches or let other sites track you.
if you want a more thorough (but still very easy!) upgrade, i second protonvpn (the free version is good!) and suggest using tor (aka the onion browser) when youâre making searches and want to be more anonymous. even incognito mode are not very anonymous. tor is a free download and works just like any other search engine besides being a little slow, but it reroutes your data and searches across different nodes to maintain your privacy and prevent searches from being connected to you!
safer way to search would be connect to vpn â> open tor â> search. obv not ~every~ search will result in repercussions but privacy really is an extra layer of safety and regardless of whether youâre looking for privacy from your govt or your family, these are good steps!
Dear Americans, get a VPN right now. I promise you, the orange man is going to mess with online privacy. Censorship and surveillance are going to be insane. Protect your privacy. This post explains the importance of a VPN quite well (it's from 2017, but it still holds up). Do some research on which VPN you should get. Do not get one from any of the countries in the 14 eyes alliance or those that cooperate with them (read the post linked above for more information). I'm not American, but I use Proton VPN, which is located in Switzerland (I use it mostly for torrenting). Protect yourselves. Times are going to be tough.

something like love
part - 3
pairing - paige bueckers x azzi fudd
word count - 3.3k
c/w - language, slight homophobia
a/n - hi, iâm back! i wrote the majority of this part while high and sheâs mostly unedited so if you see mistakes, no you donât. iâm so happy with how yâall are receiving this story and iâm having so much fun writing it! iâd like to reiterate that iâm sure paigeâs mom and step-dad are amazing parents and this is all fictional! as always, i hope you enjoy, and lmk what you think!
Finals go about as well as Azzi expected. With the way she and Paige locked in three days before, sheâs not too surprised. They didnât even go to the gym the entire time, instead staying shut up in Paigeâs bedroom with highlighters and textbooks and laptops. Although, Paige did get pretty stir-crazy on day two and started doing push-ups on the floor. Azzi had gotten a weird vibe that she was showing off.
What did make studying a little harder, though, was the fact that Paige seems to be having trouble separating their acting from their actual friendship, and has thus taken to calling Azzi âmaâ and brushing her thigh even while theyâre alone. Azzi doesnât know how to tell her to stop, or if she even really wants to.
Itâs now the day after finals and only two days before they leave for Montana, where the real challenge will begin. Needing some space from Paige, which is a rarity with them practically living together these days, Azzi has retired to own room to pack her bags. Itâs not going well.
Usually, sheâs an amazing packer. She enjoys it, even, finds it soothing to create a checklist, pick her outfits, and pack her belongings just so so that they all fit.
Today, itâs a little different. Because today, she doesnât know what to plan for, and she doesnât know her to make all her shit fit into this suitcase, and she canât decide what outfits to bring because all she can think about with each article of clothing is whether or not Paige would like it. Would Paige like these leggings, the way they hug her ass? Would she like this tight top with the plunging neckline? Would she compliment these shoes, ogle this little skirt?
Being in love with Paige is nothing new. But this, this feels foreign to Azzi, feels like when they were teenagers and she was just beginning to realize that her feelings for Paige were more than platonic. It feels nervous and jittery and insecure, and over the years Paige has become safe. She is secure and strong and rooted deeply in Azziâs very being. Azzi wants more out of her, sure, but that fact hasnât made her this afraid in years.
Groaning, Azzi fists up the sweatshirt sheâs holding and then buries her face in it to scream. Sheâs about halfway through her little tantrum when a knock on her door startles her out of it. She doesnât bother to lift her head out of the sweatshirt to mumble, âFuck off.â
The door opens anyway, of course, and then thereâs Carolâs voice, cautiously asking, âWhatâs going on in here?â
Azzi finally lifts her head to stare at her best friend. âTrying to pack for Montana.â
âYeah?â Carol asks, still speaking softly as if she were trying to soothe a rabid animal. âAnd, uh, howâs that goinâ for you?â
Azzi groans again. âReally great, yeah. Itâs awesome.â
âMm.â Carol hums, then perches herself on the edge of Azziâs bed, looking down at her. âWhatâs going on?â
âNothing,â Azzi says automatically, because she canât tell her best friend whatâs actually going on, or else sheâd give away she and Paigeâs secret. But Carol looks at her suspiciously, like she might start interrogating her at any second, and so Azzi quickly decides to tell a half-truth. âOk, I just, Iâm nervous to see Paigeâs family in Montana.â
Carol furrows her brow. âBut havenât you met them before?â
âI have,â Azzi nods. âBut only the times they came up to visit Paige, and those were far and few between.â Azzi canât help the bitter tone that seeps into the last part.
âYeah,â Carol says. âFrom what Iâve heard it doesnât seem like theyâre super involved with her. Not like her dad and step-mom.â
âTheyâre not, and they never have been,â Azzi says, clutching the sweater a little tighter as if she were choking it. âPaigeâs mom left when Paige was like three and she didnât come back to visit until an entire year later. Paige didnât even remember her by then. She says she hugged her dadâs leg and cried the first time she visited,â Azzi seethes, remembering how Paige had laughed quietly when she first told Azzi the story, her eyes sad. âAnd now theyâre homophobic and totally shut Paige out when she told them she was a lesbian and theyâre going to hate me, itâs going to be so hostile and awful andââ Azzi cuts herself off with another scream into the sweatshirt. Vaguely, she realizes itâs an old one of Paigeâs, something she stole way back in high school. Fitting.
âHey, hey,â Carol says, sliding onto the floor next to Azzi and patting her knee, âyou gotta chill out, okay? You know Paige wonât let them say a word to you. That girl would protect you with her life,â she says earnestly, and it makes Azziâs heart skip.
âYeah?â Azzi asks, just because she wants to hear it from someone else.
âShe loves you a lot, Az. And I think we all realized it a lot sooner than you did, because yâall were too fucking stupid to notice how different you are around each other.â
Azzi furrows her brow. âDifferent?â
âYeah,â Carol nods, patting Azziâs leg. âEver since we got to UConn, the two of you are always in your own world. You listen to her for hours if she wants you to and sheâs always touching on you, being all protective and shit. And donât even get me started on the way she looks at you when she thinks you wonât notice. I mean, you two are dating now and she still does that shit.â She shakes her head affectionately, then laughs. âAnd yâall were like that long before we got here, too.â
Azzi isnât really listening anymore, too stuck up on thinking, Paige looks at me?
It might seem like a silly thought because Azzi is stealing secret glances at Paige all the time, and she has done for years. But that makes sense, because Azzi is hopelessly in love with her. Paige has absolutely no reason to be staring at Azzi when she thinks nobodyâs watching.
Carol must be saying all this to make her feel better. She always knows the right thing to say.
âYeah,â Azzi says, instead of saying what sheâs really thinkingâThereâs absolutely no chance Paige looks at me in secretâand when Carol leans in to hug her, she returns it, letting her head rest on her best friendâs shoulder. âThanks, Carol. Youâre right.â
âI know, girl,â Carol responds. Azzi takes a deep breath, trying her best to chill out, and just as theyâre separating, her door cracks open. Of course, speak of the devil, in pops Paige Bueckers, blond hair flowing loose around her shoulders. âAm I interrupting something?â
âNah,â Carol says, waving Paige in. âJust chatting.â
âGossip?â Paige asks, shutting the door behind her.
âDonât worry, weâd never gossip without you.â
Paige laughs and then looks down at Azzi, who is quite busy doing the very important job of picking at a scab on her knee. âHey, babe. Everything good?â
Azzi looks between her two best friends, and Carolâs giving her a soft, encouraging smile which Paige clocks immediatelyâthe three of them have gotten good at reading each other over the yearsâand she walks over to them, sitting down across from Azzi. âOkay, whatâs up?â
Surprisingly, Azziâs eyes begin to sting and a hard lump forms in her throat, emotion overtaking her more strongly than it usually does, and she only has to wonder why for just a moment before she remembers, her period should be starting any day now. Stubbornly, she swallows down the tears, refusing to embarrass herself by crying in front of them. âNothingâs up. Iâm justââ
âShe was having a hard time packing,â Carol says quickly, pushing herself up off the ground. âHow about you help her, Paige? Sit on her suitcase so she can zip it or something.â Thereâs a warning in her tone and Paige gets it immediately, based off the way she nods and scoots closer to Azzi.
As soon as Carolâs gone, Paige is reaching out to rest her arms on Azziâs knees. âWhatâs the matter?â
âNothing,â Azzi says, but Paige doesnât buy it one bit. âReally, itâs fine. Itâs dumb.â
âNot dumb, ma,â Paige says softly. Her thumb rubs against Azziâs knees, and this is something Paige only does when theyâre pretending. Azzi wonders again if she should warn Paige about the fact that their dating habits are seeping into their normal friendship, even when theyâre alone. That could become dangerous.
But right now, the comforting warmth of it is welcome.
âSeriously, just tell me,â Paige urges, impatience evident in her tone. âYouâre makinâ me all nervous.â
âDonât, itâs actually not a big deal at all.â Azzi figures she should say something before Paige builds this up in her head too much. âI just, Iâm worried about seeing your mom. I know sheâs not gonna like me because ofâŠâ she gestures between them, âthis. But I know sheâs not my favorite person either and Iâm just kinda scared that everythingâs gonna clash and youâre gonna end up getting hurt.â
Paige stares at her for a second, then nods and sighs. âYeah, that makes sense.â She looks down at her hands in Azziâs lap, then back up at her. âBut, like, if anything bad happens, itâs not gonna be on you. Itâll be on my parents for being shitty. You donât gotta worry âbout me.â
Suddenly, Azzi feels guilty. Here she is having a mental breakdown over a situation that ultimately wonât affect her nearly as much as itâll affect Paige. And here Paige is, sitting across from her, comforting her. The hands on Azziâs knees start to feel too hot.
âYou must be nervous, too,â Azzi says. âYou donât know how theyâre gonna react when you show up with me rather than some guy.â
Paige shrugs it off, but her throat bobs. âNah, itâs alright.â
Paige looks chill as can be, shoulders slumped, face relaxed. But Azzi knows her too well, notices the way her fingers are twitching and her eyes are looking everywhere but her.
âYou donât have to act in front of me,â Azzi says, hoping it doesnât sound too corny.
âI know,â Paige says immediately. She finally meets Azziâs eyes. âListen, I might be a little nervous. But itâs whatever. And you donât gotta be nervous, either. Whatever happens, weâll be there together, yeah?â
Azzi nods, lifting Paigeâs hands off her knees to take them in her own. âYeah, youâre right.â
âI got you,â Paige says softly, and it flusters Azzi but sheâs more focused on the way Paige is looking at her, this little crease between her brows like sheâs trying to figure something out. Just like after their kiss. But Azzi clears her throat and Paige snaps out of it, pulling her hands away from Azziâs to brush herself off. âAnd you got me. Just like always, yeah?â She stands up, then looks around awkwardly, suddenly all jittery and weird. âSo, uh, do you actually need help packing? Iâm basically a master packer, I could get it done in prolly five minutes, flat.â
Azzi knows Paige is trying to deflect from whatever that was, and it seems like, once again, theyâre not going to talk about it. Amazing.
âYouâre the worst packer Iâve met in my life, P,â Azzi teases, going with it. âI usually need to help you.â
âIâon need no help,â Paige waves her off. Then she looks down at Azziâs suitcase and scratches the back of her neck awkwardly. âBut, uh, if you wanted to come up to my place to help with some fits I wouldnât be mad.â
Azzi shakes her head, deciding to leave her packing for later. âCome on, stupid head. Letâs go.â
âYo,â Paige says, following her out of the room. âDonât call me stupid.â
âSorry youâre right,â Azzi says. âShit-for-brains is way more fitting.â
âYo!â
âââââââââââââ
Before leaving for the airport, their teammates act like theyâre going off to war. They all hug them extra-long and talk forlornly about what theyâre gonna do without âmom and dadâ around.
Now that Azzi and Paige are âdatingâ, the two of them get called mom and dad more often than they get called their actual names. Itâs kind of cute, actually, even if it is annoying sometimes.
âYou kids be good,â Paige says sternly, playing into the act, and Azzi ruffles KKâs hair and says, âdonât bother your brothers.â
âYeah, donât bother us, Camera,â Ice says, and KK tackles her. Paige and Azzi take the opportunity to sneak out.
Theyâre at the airport now, waiting in the lounge where they only get approached by two polite fans asking for pictures. Paige is just dozing off when their flight is called, and Azzi manages to drag her through the gate into the plane before sheâs slouching in her seat, falling asleep as soon as she sits down.
She wakes thirty minutes later, and she rests her head on Azziâs shoulder when they start up a movie to watch. When she does, instinct takes over and Azzi doesnât really realize what sheâs doing until she kisses Paige on the head, nuzzling into her blonde hair, and sheâs mid-nuzzle when she remembers that they have no reason to be all up on each other like this. Paige is stiff on her shoulder now, and Azzi laughs awkwardly, lifting her head to stare blankly at the movie. âMy bad. Habit.â
âYouâre good,â Paige says. She softens on Azziâs shoulder, and then she mumbles something completely incoherent.
âSorry, what?â Azzi asks, popping an earbud out to hear better.
âHuh?â Paige says.
âYou said something.â
âNah, youâre hearinâ stuff.â
âPaige.â
âShh, Iâm missing the movie.â
âPaige, seriously, whatâd you just say? You tryna talk crap?â
âNo,â Paige says emphatically. She shrugs, then leans her head a little further into Azziâs neck and mutters, âI just said I didnât mind.â
âDidnât mind what?â Azzi asks, scrunching her nose.
âAre you dumb?â Paige says.
âRude,â Azzi responds, and then she says, âWait. You didnât mind when I kissed you?â
âDidnât mind when you kissed my head,â Paige corrects.
Itâs Azziâs turn to mumble, âWell, I know you didnât mind when we kissed for real, either,â and Paige hears it and lifts her head up, shoving Azzi away. âHey, chill with allat. I said that to you in a moment of weakness.â
Azzi shoves her right back, hoping to hide the feelings sheâs sure are written all across her face, because Paige has admitted that she wants to kiss Azzi again and now theyâre bringing that up, and what does it even mean?
âAw,â Azzi says, trying for casual, âyou big olâ softy.â
âI ainât soft,â Paige says gruffly, looking out the window and crossing her arms over her chest.
âI think you are,â Azzi sing-songs, then she leans over into Paigeâs space. Paige doesnât turn to her, but her breath hitches when Azzi whispers close to her ear, âI think youâre soft as hell for me.â
Paige stares stubbornly out the window. âNo clue what youâre talkinâ about.â
âMm,â Azzi hums, and then she rests her chin on her shoulder, gazing out the window as well, even though her mind is elsewhere. âI think you like doing this with me, P.â Feeling bold, she sneaks her hand onto Paigeâs thigh, clad in those basketball shorts that always do something to Azziâs head. âI think youâre surprised by how much you like it. Having an excuse to be all over me whenever you want. Acting like Iâm all yours when weâre around people.â
Paige gasps when Azzi presses her lips to her neck, not kissing her but just resting there, and she turns back to look at her when Azzi lifts her head.
Theyâre inches apart.
Paige looks at her lips. Sheâs been doing that a lot ever since their conversation in the bathroom. Azzi is a soldier for the amount of restraint she usually has, because when Paige looks at her like thisâthis new, unfamiliar look on her face while she stares at her lipsâevery bone in her body wants to close the gap between them.
Today, her restraint feels frayed. And so she leans forward, slowly, and kisses just the edge of Paigeâs mouth. Not a real kiss. But not friendly, either.
Paige gasps.
Azzi breathes out shakily, and then she shoves Paigeâs face away playfully. âWatch our movie, dumbass.â
Azzi is shaking for the entirety of the movie, but at least sheâs pretending to watch it. The entire time, she can feel Paigeâs eyes burning into her skin.
Azzi gets the sinking feeling that something unexpected is going to happen on this trip.
âââââââââââââ
They get off the plane at 7pm. By the time they get their bags, itâs 7:30. And by the time Paigeâs parents pull up to get them, it is 7:45. Paige clutches Azziâs to her side with one hand, her suitcase held tight in the other. Her mom and step-dad look at them strangely and whisper to each other before getting out of the car.
âHey, kiddo,â Dean is the first to speak. âHow was the flight?â
Paige releases Azzi so he can pull her into an awkward hug while her mom stands back. âYeah, uh, it was good.â
âGood, good,â Dean nods. âThatâs good.â He glances back at his wife, who is looking between Paige and Azzi with this expression on her face that Azzi doesnât like at all. âHere, um, let me get you ladiesâ bags.â
He takes a suitcase in each hand and pops the trunk to start loading up their stuff. He murmurs something to Amy when he passes, by, and she nods stiffly before taking a measly step forward. âHi, baby. YourâŠhair looks nice.â
Azzi almost squeezes her eyes shut at how awkward this is. But at the same time she canât, watching mother and daughter like sheâs watching a train wreck.
âThanks, Mom.â Paige is the first to reach out, and even though Amy holds her stiffly, Paige falls into her motherâs arms, something she has never been able to do often. Azzi can tell Paige thinks it may be the last time and is trying to savor it.
âPaige,â Amy says, pulling away from her daughter after a few moments and glancing pointedly at Azzi, âI see you brought your friend.â
Paige looks back at Azzi, who, despite her own nervousness, gives Paige her most encouraging smile.
âThatâs alright, we have a pullout,â Amy says after neither of them responds. âWouldâve been nice to know that I needed to shop for an extra person, though.â
Azzi winces. What a rude thing to say.
âSo, whereâs Ryan?â she goes on, and Azziâs stomach churns. This is it. âYour father and I have been dying to meet him.â
âNot my father,â Paige murmurs quietly enough that Dean wonât be able to hear from where heâs still lingering behind the car, taking great care in loading up their bags.
âDonât be like that, Paige, you know what I meant,â Amy sighs, then runs a hand down her face. âRyan isnât here, is he?â
At this, Dean perks up, closing the trunk door.
Paige backs up a few steps, back to Azzi, and takes her hand to pull her forward. âNo, heâs not.â
âUh,â Azzi says, speaking for the first time when everyone looks at her expectantly. âNice to see you guys again.â
âGood to see you too, Azzi,â Dean says jovially, even though theyâve only met a few times.
Amy looks at Paige. âWhy is she here with you?â
She looks as if she knows the answer and is dreading it.
Paige, always so brave, strives on anyway.
âMom, Dean,â Paige says. âIâm sorry for springing this on you, I know it seems last-minute. ButâŠâ she looks over at Azzi, who squeezes her hand a little.
She smiles softly down at her, and doesnât even bother to look at her parents when she says, âAzziâs my girlfriend.â
Amy places a hand to her chest and Dean walks forward to rub her back soothingly. Azzi inches a little closer to Paige. Here they go.

Random things i think Cybertronians would find adorable about humans~⥠Pt. 2
1. Us getting scared by small things
Humans jumping or screaming at a bug, sudden noise, or a scare prank would probably seem hilarious to the bots, who would be 100% amused by how easily humans can be startled. I bet MANY bots would take advantage of this when there would be a lil human on the lost light. Bots like Whirl, Trailbreaker sometimes Swerve that would like to scare the human despite them telling him not to.
Ya all know the vine video? With guy that goes: "Aaah stoop im gonna drop my criossant."
Yes that XDD
2. Us getting lost even with maps or GPS
I personally have terrible sense of direction and orientation (*p_q*) And some bots catching humans struggle with directions, even with GPS, would be both puzzling and funny to them. They always wonder how humans get lost so easily. But come on give the lialison a break the lost light is fucken HUGE.
3. Getting âhangryâ
I mostly get tired when i'm hungry but when im also irritated i become hangry. I think bots would find humans getting irritable when theyâre hungry both funny and perplexing to them who might see it as an amusing âmalfunctionâ due to our a basic need.
4. Human body âglitchesâ
Hiccups, sneezes or random muscle twitches and similar reflexes would be entertaining to the bots, whoâd find these involuntary responses both weird and amusingly unpredictable especially when we tell them that we can't control them. Get ready to be friendly bullied for this by some of the bots.
Human sitting over on Swerve's bar counter: *sneezes*
Whirl: What the frag was that sound? A sparkling's war cry?
Human: ( ïœĄá»ïžżá»)
5. Collecting random souvenirs
Humans collecting small souvenirs, like seashells, keychains, or mugs from places they visit, would be amusing to Cybertronians, who might see it as an odd way of marking memories. Since from what i was reading in comics i didn't see any bots do this and i think they would find this pretty adorable. Almost like we materialize memories.
We are all like crows :3
6. Huddling for warmth
When humans instinctively huddle together or bundle up in thick layers when we're cold. Bots would simply find it cute amd definitively have to fight the yrge to just- squish-
Our need to find warmth and the cozy solutions we come up with would seem quaint and endearing (*ÂŽË`*)
7. Gathering in groups for safety
The way we instinctively form groups, especially in unfamiliar or intimidating amd scary situations would be both cute and a bit amusing to bots who might see it as humansâ way of finding strength in numbers despite their physical smallness. But we find great comfort in it ( *^èž^*)
8. Soothing or hugging each other in stress
When we instinctively comfort each other with hugs or reassuring words would be adorably puzzling to the bots, whoâd find it endearing that humans can find peace in such small, gentle gestures. I bet a bot that is visibly sad would be pretty surprised when the human lialison comes up to them and just hug their servo and ask if they want to talk about it. It personally makes me happy when i can comfort and help someone in need ( ïœĄá» áŽá»)
9. Making eye contact to connect
Humans instinctively make eye contact to establish trust or share feelings, which many bots would find very intimate, sincere and honest because it shows how deep the personal nature of human connection can go ( âá”áŽá”â )
(bots getting lost in human's eyes is one of my guilty pleasures)
10. Fighting for whatâs important
We humans naturally stand up for our values, friends, and families, often driven by an instinct to protect or defend what we love. I think bots would find this fierce loyalty and bravery adorably noble for such a small species such as us. I even think that many would take us for an example in this (ïœĄ>ă
<ïœĄ)
11. Helping others instinctively
Cybertronians would likely find this endearing that humans instinctively help each other outâwhether holding open a door, picking up dropped items, or offering support without being asked. This is the very nature that makes us human (*ÂŽâœ`*)
12. Blushing when embarrassed or flustered
The way our cheeks turn pink or red when we're shy, embarrassed, or flustered would be extremely cute to the bots, whoâd see it as a âgiveawayâ that adds to our vulnerability and the fact that we just can't hide our emotions makes us very emotionaly transparent is just straight up adorable.
13. The way the human brain is so simple
I personaly am very simple human being and i find many stupid and simple things funny and laugh at them. I think because of this many bots would find us very innocent and adorable
(ïœĄ>âœ<ïœĄ)
AAAAARRRGH there's so many other things i wanna write but i decided to make part two of this bc i enjoy writing this stuff. Dis a good soup :33
(i might add a small masterlist to my pinned post :3)

âŠWhile I did talk about the issue wrt dehumanization having Problems, I think it's also worth mentioning to anyone saying that "Well, I know those people, and I know they're just horribly naiive," a thing y'all miss is that people saying what Bog says aren't coming from a place of isolation either.
Like, in a lot of cases for the people speaking like Bog, they've lived amongst these people, and have had to deal with their horrible bullshit. If you weren't aware, Bog's openly talked on numerous occasions about their shitty fundie family members they've personally known, so that's the perspective they're coming from.
I have heard shit about these people from friends stuck in abusive, bigoted rural right-wing families in bigoted right-wing rural areas which has made me think "These people should be dragged into the street and shot."
Not just on a political level mind you, but a horribly, horribly personal one, some of the shit I've heard them say about their terrible parents and peers makes me have an utmost loathing for said parents and peers' demographic.
So like, if you're defending them based on that, I feel like there's probably 2 differentiating factors. A) You're talking about different people, people who aren't totally ideologically committed to the Rural Konformist Khorne Kult, in which case we're talking past each other, or more notably B)You aren't in their crosshairs; so you can ignore the extreme abuses they put on others, the others who're saying the things you call "dehumanizing."
And I think noting whether you're in B) is important to know how to respond to this...
Young people have GOT to stop talking about conservatives like they're scary menacing monsters. Yes the policies they back are horrifically destructive but that's entirely because of how individually stupid, fearful, emotionally stunted, weak willed and catastrophically gullible they are. That all is what made them become right wing to begin with. Just the most easily manipulated zombie sheep on earth.

I do try to avoid grumbling about rude/inconsiderate people as much as I can on this blog because I want to keep the tone of the blog positive and helpful rather than "grumpy person nagging you to behave better while always griping and being grumpy about people being rude". It's also why I try to balance my posts between "do this kind thing that's nice and considerate" and "avoid this inconsiderate behavior" instead of just having it all the latter so I'm not the nagging and complaining blog.
Nevertheless, I am human, and I make this post for the hopes of discussion and feedback as much as it is me griping about this.
I thought COVID would make people more conscious about covering their mouth when they cough or sneeze in public + respecting other people's person space bubbles more. Somehow, the opposite seems to have happened? I don't know if it's just where I live, but I feel like people have somehow gotten *worse* about open mouth coughing and sneezing in public and invading other people's personal space. How?? Why??
I also feel like I don't see parents / guardians / caretakers teaching their kids to cover their mouth when they cough or sneeze anymore. I understand you can't expect a baby or a young toddler to cover their mouth. But a kid as old as 6, 7, 8+ should be able to. Now it's a daily thing whether I'm in public or visiting friends/family with kids that I see their little ones who are in primary school open mouth coughing and sneezing right at other people while their parent / guardian just stares at them with a blank expression and doesn't react.
Of course, this is 100% the adult's fault for not enforcing this behavior, I'm not trying to hate on kids for not getting proper guidance from the adults in their life. And of course kids mirror the behavior they see in adults, and if the adults around them are open mouth coughing and sneezing of course they'll mimic that. I just think it's disappointing that this has somehow gotten worse instead of better after enduring an airborne pandemic spread by coughing.
Anyway, I don't know if it's just me or just the area that I live in, but does anyone else feel like people have somehow gotten worse about covering their mouth when they cough or sneeze + teaching kids to do the same?

Hellooo, I have a question about Billford in your au.
how do they get a chance to get together if both Mabel and Stanley are keeping a sharp eye on them, and forbidding them of any romantic relationships?
They are NOT keeping a sharp eye on them.
Mabel has identified Bill as a needy ex, and is determined to get him to move onïżœïżœbut like, he's gonna be dating around town! She's gonna meet a couple of the people he goes out with! (We're using the word "people" really loosely here.) And Bill's attitude toward Ford has evolved from "hey buddy, don't you wanna be buddies again, buddy??" to "if you don't like me then why bother." So getting Bill to move on is totally working, right?
(I DO still need to edit a couple scenes in some early chapters for TBOB compatibility on this frontâbut that basically only means Mabel's going from "I need to help Bill make new friends and keep him away from Ford so he won't be a jerk toward him" to "I need to help Bill make new friends and keep him away from Ford so he won't be a jerky ex toward him." Either way, she's mostly concerned about Bill being a jerk.)
Stan has realized Ford's weirdly obsessive over Bill... but not THAT kind of obsessive. It's like "interview him about his species while vivisecting him" obsessive. Like so. Ford gets like this about stuff! Stan might not have a damn clue what autism is but he sure as hell has seen his brother's special interests! He tried to kill that triangle for thirty years, this obsession is not coming from a place of love. He's worried about Fordâbut he's NOT worried about romance.
As a bonus, the two of them DIDN'T have a past relationshipâthey're not actually exes, they just spent the 80s being weirdly homoeroticâso there's no grounds to worry that they might "get back together." Bill's current feelings on Ford are more mixed; but at this point in the fic, Ford honestly, genuinely, truly hates Bill with no romantic interest.
Plus, once romance creeps onto the table, Ford thinks "if anything happens between Bill and me, my family would never forgive me (and I'd never forgive myself)" and Bill thinks "if anything happens between Ford and me, the Pines would murder me, and that might not be hyperbole." They'll be motivated to downplay their feelings for each order before feelings even start to happen.
Bill & Ford tend to clam up around each other or only have shallow surface-level conversations when other people are around. When they DO have serious heart-to-heart discussions they trip and stumble into them when no one's listening. (They keep having serious conversations at midnight, usually in the kitchen. It's happened like, what, four times so far?) This is gonna continue in future chapters. Oh, boy is it gonna continue.
So during this time period, as far as anyone else knows, on a scale of 0 = sheer loathing to 10 = passionate love, Ford's feelings for Bill go from 0 to 2 and Bill's feelings for Ford go from 3 to 1.
It doesn't help that their idea of flirting is "spend an entire day arguing about whether or not Minnesota exists and compromise by agreeing the backs of dollar bills are blank. Tell no one how this is a compromise." This is some kind of shrimp romance.
(This is an actual upcoming chapter, and I wrote it like a week before TBOB came out where Bill has a whole paragraph about how Minnesota doesn't exist. Originally the chapter was about Wyoming. I still think Wyoming works better than Minnesota but I'm tickled "Bill claims a state doesn't exist" is canon.)
Add that all up? And by the time anyone realizes something's going onâIF anyone realizes something's going onâthey've been licking each other's eyeballs and roleplaying erotic deicide for weeks.
(This is a slight exaggeration. Only Bill's into eyeball licking.)

This Remembrance Day among their many faces and stories, we also remember those who held their lovers for the last time, unable to share a kiss goodbye. Those who could only nod solemnly over news of their comradeâs passing lest others know the true nature of their feelings. Those who burnt their diaries and letters lest the world know who they loved. Those who died in the dirt with eyes fixed towards the sky with letters signed âthineâ in breast pockets sent between those history will only ever regard as âjust friendsâ. Those branded cowards and enemies, those imprisoned and beaten, those who put themselves in the line of fire to avoid the shame of the court martial and the lifetime of scorn from their family and community.
So often are their stories omitted from history books and conversation because acknowledging who they loved is seen as disgracing the puritan fantasy of remembrance which is now so divorced from the realties of what went on. No one can so much as suggest a difference in sexuality without accusations of tarnishing a personâs legacy, as if a difference in sexuality is something to be ashamed of. The powerful and complex blend of camaraderie, affection, friendship, love, romance, and devotion is a truly forgotten part of the world wars. We may never truly know who they were or the nature of their love and bonds, but if we exist today, so too did they.
Iâve been fortunate enough to meet with a wonderful researcher who published a phenomenal report on the discrimination faced by 2SLGBTQ+ soldiers of the Canadian Expeditionary Force during WW1 which I highly recommend a read through as this person was able to track down actual names and photos of forgotten faces. I know for the last 8 years Iâve been trying to educate in various small ways on this blog, but every 11th of November that comes I find myself remembering those real and almost invisible people who obnoxious commenters and biased historians are so quick to discredit and rewrite to fit their bigotry, as if that does not disrespect their memory more so than any mention of sexuality ever could. Who someone loved or how they expressed themselves may have only served as just one piece of the puzzle to their grand identity, but nevertheless, no one should be made to feel it disgraceful or shameful to simply acknowledge in good faith, whether itâs in truth or possibility.
This photoset was created with stories like this in mind. We have always been here. And though we didnât know you, we see you.
And it hurts to miss you, but itâs worse to know
That Iâm the reason you wonât come home
Photos by keltikfilm, editing by me
#seeing more sources ACTUALLY talking about Wilfred Owen or Sassoon and the lot in a way that doesnât completely ignore their sexuality#and they do it in a way that makes them loving men sound natural and casual and factual instead of sensationalising it for clicks#opposite of the chap who runs that one Lawrence of Arabia website who is violently passionate about him being straight like#he ainât gonna fck you bro#wild but not shocking that itâs been over 100 years and ppl are still fighting over whether or not there were gay soldiers#like yeah man we really just spawned here in the 1970s youâre right :///#rememberence#armistice day#lgbtq history

Notes:Â I'm a fool for Christmas stories, so I'm back at it again this year. This time having a story featuring both Joel and Negan. Apparently my favorite duo! I will be updating this story three times a week until Christmas!
Remember Y/N means your name or whatever name you choose.
The warmth of a crackling fire. The scent of gingerbread, peppermint or a freshly put-up Christmas tree. It was amazing how many things could really start reminding you of Christmas. It was a time where those who celebrated would start to get excited for the festivities that were to come. Radio stations were playing Christmas music. Stores would be full with people shopping for both presents and food for their holidays. Christmas was always certain to draw out many emotions from people. Whether it was the excitement of the holiday, the events that you could go to, getting together with your family or just the whole genre all together.
Sometimes baking, decorating, planning and enjoying the overall atmosphere of Christmas could be a good distraction for someone who was going through a hard time. Right now that was the primary focus for Y/N. It was toward the end of her workday. Luckily, she got to work remotely from home so that meant she could also do other things at home when she had her breaks. Right now, the smell of gingerbread and sugar cookies were filling her home and she knew the timer would be going off any moment now. She was in the middle of a video call with her boss Carol and her best friend Rosita who had gotten her this job so many years ago when she was in need of one. What was supposed to be a rundown of the work they were getting done when Y/N went on vacation had become a talk between friends instead. Each person going over what they would be doing for the holiday.
âYou seem distracted,â Rosita noted with Y/N looking back over her shoulder. Forcing herself to look back at the screen, Y/N realized that she must have checked on the timer too much. Rosita wasnât one to pick up on things like that easily, so it had to have been a lot. âWhat are you up to now?â
âIâm just baking some cookies before the children get home,â Y/N was honest with the two. There was no reason for her to lie. She got her work done fast. In fact, she was the best worker in the business. Not that it was a great job or something entirely too complicated. It was just a data entry job that she had gotten when she was younger so that way she could help cover the bills. It wasnât her dream job, but Y/N had gotten pregnant when she was seventeen and had her daughter when she was eighteen. That led to her not being able to get a degree until years later and it was just an associate degree from the local community college. At the time she got the job, she was desperately in need of a job that allowed her to be home with the baby and this one just happened to work out. Thankfully, Carol understood at the time because she had children as well and this job worked for her. Y/N always told herself that she would get a different job eventually. One that was better, but now her daughter was seventeen and she also had a son that was thirteen. She just got comfortable in the job that she was in and stayed. It wasnât something to brag about, but at least she liked the people she worked with. And she got to stay home except for going into the office a few times a month. She couldnât really complain. Especially when she got to be home to raise the children. âTheir dad picked them up from school and they were supposed to be going out to eat with him.â
âI donât know how you do it girl,â Rosita declared with a long sigh, adjusting her Bluetooth earphones that she was using over the video. âItâs super hard with just having Coco running around the house now. Yet, here you are baking cookies, decorating the house, being the amazing PTO mom for your children.â
âItâs a little different having teenage children than it is a toddler,â Y/N reminded her friend with a hesitant laugh. âI remember the days of Elizabeth and Peter being that age and it was hard. Sleep was not a normal thing during those days.â
âAnd suddenly Iâm very happy that Sophia and Benjamin are in college and Henry is about to graduate,â Carol spoke up with a half-smile, throwing her hands up in the air when she spoke. âKids are cute, but if I could do it all over again, Iâm not sure I would.â
âCarol!â Rosita laughed making Y/N smile when her over the top boss continued to make a very dramatic expression. âI doubt Ezekiel would be happy hearing you say that.â
âWhat Ezekiel doesnât know wonât hurt him,â Carol placed her hand to her chest, and, in that moment the sound of the timer for the cookies was going off. âAlright ladies. We can sign off now so you can get to the rest of your day. Enjoy your holiday vacation, Y/N.â
Signing out of work and closing up her laptop, Y/N pushed back her chair and headed into the kitchen. It had been a few years since Y/N had really taken time off for herself. In the past she would have taken vacation time a lot, but not so much lately. Thatâs why she had taken it all at once. She had to take it, so it just made sense to do it at Christmas time. It gave her more time to focus on the children and enjoy the holiday.
Taking her cookies out of the oven, she set them out onto a rack to cool them. Preparing the frosting, she knew that the kids often liked to help so she was getting things ready for them. Likely, she would start the decorating of the cookies and they would help her finish. While the cookies continued to cool, she made her way around the house cleaning things up. The fireplace was on which gave a nice aura to the room that matched the lights that went with the heavily decorated tree in the corner of the living room. At the bottom of the tree was a toy train that her family had been collecting multiple pieces for since she was eighteen years old. It was a tradition to put it out every year. And each year they would try to add pieces to it. For Christmas, she had always tried to go out of her way to make it magical for her children. Being such a young mom, she wanted to do her best to make the holiday feel special for her children. At first, they didnât have much, so she had to find ways to make things special and decorating was really the easiest way to do that.
Moving over toward the front window, there was a nook that was dawned with a Christmas village with extensive buildings and figurines that she had been collecting since she was younger as well. Each year she would buy one piece to add to it and it always looked really neat setting it up every year and lighting it up in the front window. Turning that on, she knew this was a daily thing. She got into the routine of things and it was just normal for her. Stockings were hanging in front of the fireplace and it just felt cozy for anyone that may have enjoyed Christmas.
Heading back into the kitchen, she started decorating the sugar cookies first. There were various shapes of candy canes, Santa hats, sleighs, stuffed bears, snowmen, reindeer and snowflakes. Those she figured her children would be less interested in decorating. It was usually the gingerbread men and women they had the most fun with.
The sound of the front door pushing open was heard and it made her smile when her son calling out to her followed, âMom? Where are you?â
âIn the kitchen kiddo,â she responded, raising her voice just enough. It was probably obvious where she was, but her son was very dramatic and liked to make his presence known. Hearing the sound of footsteps, she gasped when she felt a pair of arms wrapping around her and hugging her firmly from behind. Looking over her shoulder, she saw her son cuddling into her and it made her smile. âHey Peter. How was school?â
âIt was the last day before vacation, so great,â Peter offered up a big smile, his long eyelashes fluttering to an open. Y/N turned on her heel, brushing her fingers through her sonâs dark hair and he gave her a weak smile. âIâm not supposed to tell you, but dad got me a big peppermint chocolate shake today at the diner. It was huge! It had sprinkles too.â
âGood job at keeping a secret,â Y/N heard the sound of her daughter coming into the kitchen. Elizabethâs dark hair was pulled back into a ponytail, her dark eyes connecting with her motherâs when she dropped her backpack down in the corner of the kitchen. âNo one is going to trust you with a secret ever. I hope you know that.â
âI have a hard time lying,â Peter explained, moving in beside his mother to see all the cookies she had already decorated. âIâm going to be on such a sugar high tonight.â
âMaybe you donât deserve to eat those cookies since you told on me,â a voice spoke up from the entrance of the kitchen making Y/N look back. âEllie had my back. You on the other handâŠâ
âLiz. I want to be called Liz, dad,â Elizabeth corrected her father making him groan out in frustration, reaching out to pull his daughter in closer to him. A frustrated sound fell from Elizabeth with how hard her father was hugging her to his chest. âDad! Come on!â
âYou know she wants to be called Liz now, Joel,â Y/N corrected with a long sigh. It had the color flooding into Elizabethâs face since both her parents werenât really latching onto the whole Liz nickname. âIâm also aware of it, but Iâm still having a hard time not calling her Elizabeth.â
âI reckon Iâm never going to be able to remember this whole Liz thing,â Joelâs southern drawl lingered, his dark eyes narrowing when he lifted his hand to give Y/N a small wave. It had her returning the gesture watching Joel lean down to press a kiss against Elizabethâs temple. Looking between the three of them, she let out a long sigh. The older the children got, the more they looked like their father. Joelâs genes were strong in both Elizabeth and Peter. They had his eye color, skin tone and hair color. The trio looked gorgeous on her daughter and her son looked like a mini version of Joel. Pretty close to what she remembered when she first met Joel. âYouâre always going to be my Ellie. You should know that. No matter how old you get, or how uncool it is to call you that. Iâve been calling you Ellie since before you could walk.â
âYeah, yeah. I know,â Elizabeth pat her father on the stomach playfully. Pulling out from beneath Joelâs arm, Elizabeth moved over to look at the cookies. Almost instinctively she reached for some of the decorating icing to start helping. Following in his sisterâs footsteps, Peter started to help as well.
âI always loved this day,â Joel stammered, walking across the kitchen to step in behind Y/N. Lowering his head in beside hers, Joel let his breath linger against the side of her neck. The closeness of him surprised her as he stretched his arm out to grab one of the sugar cookies that hadnât been decorated yet. Instead of pulling away, Joel turned in to press a kiss against her cheek and it had her eyes coming to a tight close. Once the warmth of him left, her eyes opened and she saw him resting back against the counter. Tipping his head back, he dropped the cookie into his mouth and groaned at the way it tasted. âYour cookies were always top notch.â
âAnd you always stole a ton of them before they were done being decorated,â Y/N reminded Joel with a tiny chuckle causing him to shrug dramatically. Reaching for another cookie had her huffing out and he gave a wicked smirk.
Seeing Peter do the same made her scoff and shake her head. Wanting to be as much like his father as possible, Peter would often mimic the things that Joel would do. Which meant he plowed back two sugar cookies as well.
âHow big was this shake?â Y/N wondered which had Joel shrugging and shaking his head. Obviously not wanting to give the answer.
âGigantic,â Peter explained with a mouthful of the last cookie that he shoved into his mouth.
âYouâre not helping buddy,â Joel grunted under his breath, swallowing down the last of his sugar cookie. âI need some milk.â
âYou know where it is,â Y/N nodded toward the cabinet where the glasses were. With a sigh, Joel moved across the kitchen and grabbed four glasses setting them out on the counter. Heading over to the fridge, Joel pulled out the milk and started pouring a glass for everyone. âI guess itâs a good thing he is going to be with you tonight. Because you know how he gets when he has this much sugar.â
âIâm thirteen mom, Iâm not six anymore,â Peter snickered, nudging his mother playfully with his hip and it had her smiling. âI can handle being on a sugar high. Iâm a big boy.â
âStill my baby,â Y/N claimed with a wink, lowering down to press a kiss over the top of Peterâs head. âDid the two of you pack last night?â
âI did,â Elizabeth replied with a gaze down at her brother seeing him swallow down his last bit of cookie. âHe did not.â
âSellout,â Peter retorted under his breath, working to decorate the next cookie he grabbed from the rack. âI gotâŠdistracted. I was playing a game and before you know it, it was really late and I knew I had schoolâŠâ
âMaybe you should have stopped playing the game?â Elizabeth suggested with a tip of her head, drawing Peter to grumble something under his breath.
âI really donât understand why we canât just have dad stay over,â Peter blurt out making Joel clear his throat. It had Y/N looking back at him and she could see that tension that filled Joelâs body while he was drinking the milk that he had poured for himself. âItâs Christmas. We should have things be the way they used to be.â
âThatâs not how things are done when your parents are divorced,â Elizabeth stated with a roll of her eyes making Y/Nâs heart skip a beat with her children talking about her and Joel. âWeâre lucky that our parents get along. Some of my friends, their parents hate each other. Fight over them just to make the other mad. And itâs never about them, itâs always for personal reasons. It makes them miserable because the parents are more so focused on hurting the other one instead of loving them.â
âIâm just saying,â Peter kept up with his previous statement setting aside the decorated cookie and reaching for another. âI remember things being really fun when we did this. I miss that. I wish we could just go back to the way things were. Dad could move back in and we could do what we did every year.â
âBud?â Joel spoke quietly which had Peter looking over his shoulder at his father. Joel shook his head and Peterâs tanned flesh went pale.
This was the fourth Christmas that the two of them had spent separated. It was three years since they had been divorced. Joel was her high school sweetheart. Both of them had big dreams. She wanted to travel the world and be a journalist. Live in the big city. Joel wanted to be either a football player or a professional singer. But when she got pregnant? That didnât exactly work out for either one of them. It meant she never left her hometown. Neither did he.
Joelâs parents died tragically when he was eighteen which left him taking care of his little brother Tommy. Tommy was five years younger than Joel and because Joel didnât want Tommy going into the system, he also adopted Tommy. So not only was he taking care of his little brother, but Joel had gotten Y/N pregnant not long after. That meant an incredible amount of stress had been thrown on him.
At first? Everything was okay between them. Joel married Y/N right after Elizabeth was born. They moved into Joelâs parentsâ house and he was a great dad. He never stopped being a great dad. Joel took on his fatherâs business of being a contractor since he had helped his dad when he was a teenager while she stayed home taking care of both Elizabeth and Tommy. Four years after Elizabeth was born, they had Peter. Originally, it wasnât too hard because Tommy helped out with the children and around the house, but when Tommy turned eighteen he decided that he wanted to make a difference in the world and joined the army. That alone stressed Joel out to the extreme.
By the time she was twenty-one and Joel was twenty-three they had been through a lot. More than most people their age had been. They werenât making much money and they were doing their best just to get by. Thankfully, she got her job soon after that which helped with the bills and she got to stay home to take care of the children. It was a few years more before they moved out of Joelâs parentsâ home and got one of their own. Even though she thought they had the perfect life, Joel was unhappy. And each day that became more and more clear. He was still an amazing father, but they started bickering. A few fights here and there led to nights where they would verbally fight all night long, sometimes leading their fights into the middle of the day.
After years of that, it led to them separating four years ago and eventually to their divorce three years ago. Neither of the children took it well. They both really loved their dad. And rightfully so. Joel was a good father. There was something about Joel that they were drawn to. She was with them all the time growing up and Joel was always the parent that was gone long nights and was working really hard, so he was the parent they wanted the attention of the most. And when he was home? He gave it to them. So it was safe to say they mostly blamed her for the divorce. They tried to hide it more now, but when the separation first happened neither Elizabeth nor Peter were happy with her. It made her happy that after this long, there were no more fights and even though there was an occasional comment made here or there, they seemed to be happy with her.
Joel and Y/N had shared custody of the children. Which meant they were pretty open with things. They were supposed to be with her half the month and with him half the other, but they never stopped the children from seeing them if they wanted. Joel had moved back into his parentsâ old home with Tommy which was only a few blocks away so they still spent a lot of time together.
Honestly? Y/N never really got over the divorce. Her feelings for Joel were just as strong as the day she met him. Joelâs family had moved to town when she was young and she immediately had a crush on him. They were just kids then though.
Their divorce was hard on her. It wasnât like anyone cheated. It was just the tension of it all. Joel had become cold. He wasnât a very affectionate lover. And it was always inherently clear how unhappy he was when he was married to her. Being married became lonely. Which was vastly different from how Joel was when they were younger. Joel was very affectionate in the beginning. Very loving. Now? They got along as much as they could for the children. Which meant she had to push down a lot of her feelings. But it was worth it for the children to be happy and grow up in a stable environment.
âI know, Iâm not supposed to talk about the divorce,â Peter finally spoke up after the uncomfortable silence flooded the room with the three of them still decorating the cookies while Joel stayed in the back of the kitchen. âI just really miss how things used to be. Thatâs all.â
âI do too,â Elizabeth agreed quietly, but Y/N didnât know what to say so she kept her mouth shut. Of course she missed the way things used to be.
âI can help decorate,â Joel offered, setting his glass of milk down on the counter. Moving over toward the gingerbread cookies, he pulled one of them off the rack and set up his area to start decorating. âWe always used to decorate cookies as ourselves every year. So why not do that again?â
âThis could take a while,â Y/N suggested, but Joel look to her with his dark eyes and shrugged. âTess wonât get mad that you are here?â
âThey arenât together anymore,â Elizabeth was quick to answer and it had a rush of color flushing into Joelâs face. When his eyes connected with Elizabethâs she shrugged her shoulders dramatically just like Peter had done earlier. âWell, you arenât.â
âHow long has that been?â Y/N looked to Joel noticing that he got uncomfortable when they brought up his ex-girlfriend. Tess and Joel had started dating a few months after their divorce finalized, so she was surprised to hear they werenât together. Joel bobbed his head about with Peter adjusting his spot at the counter to move in next to his father to start decorating his gingerbread cookie.
âA while,â Joel grumbled under his breath, bringing his fingers up to suck off the icing that was at the tips of them. It had his dimples showing and he could see that Y/N was staring at him. âI donât really pay attention to time with how busy Iâve been with work.â
âMonths,â Elizabeth spoke again for her father keeping her focus on the cookies that were there.
âIâm glad you know more about my dating life,â Joel rumbled reaching for one of the sugar cookies to shove another one into his mouth.
âI just pay attention,â Elizabeth pointed out realizing that she was making her father uncomfortable talking about Tess. âWhen the two of you were together, she was always texting me. Making plans with Peter and me. Since you two broke up? I havenât heard from her.â
âI thought you liked Tess,â Y/N recalled what the children had told her when she talked about the woman that Joel had been with.
âWe did,â Peter replied back, his voice now muffled since he copied his father again in grabbing another cookie.
âItâs just strange that she drops us the moment they break up. You work so hard to build this relationship with us because youâre dating our father and then you cut us off completely when the two of you break up?â Elizabeth legitimately seemed bothered by the fact that Tess stopped interacting with them. âItâs messed up.â
âSo how about these cookies? Huh?â Joel tried to come up with a distraction, going to reach for another one, but Y/N reached out to place her hand over his wrist to stop him. Instead of listening to her urgings, Joel grabbed one of the snowman cookies and bit off the head of it. âThey taste really good.â
âI wouldnât know. I was trying to finish helping mom decorate them first,â Elizabeth smirked back at her father, giving him a shake of her head. He finished off the cookie before going back to decorating. When they finished off the sugar cookies, the girls went to decorating their gingerbread women. Joel had moved on to working on other cookies, but Peter was pretty dedicated to making his gingerbread man perfect. By the time they were done, Peter was still working on that single cookie. âWhatâs taking you so long Peter?â
âYouâre being lazy,â Joel moved in behind Peter to pick him up in his arms, pulling him away from the counter. The two of them wrestled while their laughter filled the kitchen. Finally, Y/N grabbed herself one of the finished sugar cookies that she had made while watching the two of them. âMaking the three of us do all the work.â
âI just wanted mine to be good,â Peter jumped on Joelâs back, hooking his arms around Joelâs shoulders. It had Elizabeth rolling her eyes and grabbing a cookie with her mother. âYou see what I mean? We shouldnât have to go be with just dad and uncle Tommy. We should be together. Dad can just grab his stuff. Come over and we can pretend like weâre a family again. The four of us have the most fun when weâre all together.â
âAre we going to keep the gingerbread family like we did when we were younger?â Elizabeth looked to Y/N for confirmation. Nodding, she reached for a serving platter to first put down Joelâs cookie which he decorated in a green plaid shirt, work boots and a beard with dark hair. On his cookie, he gave himself a Santa hat. Then she set Elizabethâs down next to Joelâs. Elizabeth had decorated hers in a softball outfit which made sense since Elizabeth was on her softball team and loved it. Reaching for Peterâs cookie, she could see that he decorated what she assumed to be an ugly Christmas sweater for his cookie and then Y/N placed her cookie at the far end. It was just a generic gingerbread woman with her hair color. Maybe hers was the saddest of the whole crew since it had the least amount of personality of the four. âYou know your cookie is supposed to go next to dadâs.â
Elizabeth moved in beside Y/N to move the cookies together. It had a warmth flooding Y/Nâs body when she sighed. In the past they would dry out the cookies by leaving them out before displaying them. Elizabeth seemed proud of herself when Joel finally let out a long exhale.
âYour Uncle Tommy has a big night planned of movie watching, so we better get ready to go,â Joel announced moving for his milk to finish it off. Setting the glass in the sink made Y/Nâs head lower as Joel pointed upstairs. âBetter go get packed buddy. You too Ellie.â
âYes dad,â Elizabeth sighed knowing that she wanted to correct her father again, but instead she just accepted that he was still going to call her the lifelong nickname that he gave her.
It was almost as if their children were sulking as they dragged their feet out of the kitchen to head upstairs to grab their belongings to go be with their father. Once they were gone, Joel stepped in beside her and folded his arms in front of his chest. âItâs like Christmas brings out the inner child in them. Instead of being our teenagers full of teenage angst, they become young again. I like it.â
âThey still are young,â she reminded Joel with a playful nudge before heading back for a container. âIâll pack you some cookies for home.â
âAnd they will likely be all gone by tonight,â Joel declared with a snicker, placing his hand in over the soft part of his abdomen. It had her rolling her eyes and shaking her head while she gathered the cookies. âI always loved when you did the Christmas baking. All the cookies, cupcakes, piesâŠâ
âYouâre always welcome to take what you want,â she packed one container of sugar cookies and then moved to the gingerbread cookies to pack another. âSoâŠwho broke things off between you and Tess?â
âUhâŠâ Joel inhaled sharply, leaning against the counter again. Curling his fingers around the countertop, he shrugged his shoulders and didnât seem to have a good response. âIt was a little bit of both, I guess.â
Neither one of them spoke after that. It was awkward talking to Joel about his girlfriend. Tess was a very blunt person. It didnât mean that Y/N didnât like her. She did her best to like Tess, but Tess was very domineering. Which was hard since her and Joel shared children together.
âSoâŠâ Joel started, his thick fingers brushing through his hair drawing attention to his curls at the back of his neck. âWhat are you going to be doing while they are with me?â
âTomorrow morning Iâm putting decorations up around town. Helping out,â she explained, knowing that she needed things to do in order to keep herself distracted. It had Joelâs eyebrows bouncing up, his hands settling at his hips while he stared out at her.
âThat sounds like you,â Joel commented, biting at his bottom lip having a hard time thinking of something else to say to her.
âYouâre welcome to join if you want,â she offered and Joel let out a sarcastic laugh. When they were together she would always drag him along with her to do that so they had things they did together. Toward the end? Joel complained constantly and made it clear he hated it. âIâm just saying. Tommy is coming to help.â
âWell, good for Tommy,â Joel retorted with a long sigh, folding his arms in front of his chest when she shifted back and forth on her feet. âUnfortunately, I have to turn you down. I made an appointment with the children to go get photos with Santa. I know they are older now, but they seem to get a bigger kick out of it now than they did as children. Itâs less scary and more so funny. I think Ellie calls it cringe, yet they still find it super funny.â
âOh,â her face went hot when she thought about the idea of them getting photos. That was something she started as a tradition. One she was no longer included in. âThatâs nice.â
âAfter that, I promised to take them shopping for their gifts,â Joel looked toward the exit of the kitchen toward the stairs. âAnd mine.â
âLast minute shopping. Totally still you,â she couldnât help but throw that out at him since he used a similar line earlier. It had Joel smirking, his dimples showing when he shook his head.
âI guess I should go help them,â Joel pointed toward the stairs, backstepping toward the exit of the kitchen. âMake sure little man doesnât forget anything.â
âIâll clean up,â she barely had time to get that out before Joel was already making his way out of the kitchen.
Maybe that was too quick of a leave. It had Joel stopping at the bottom of the stairs to steal a quick look back at Y/N. Her head was tipped down and Joel felt tension in his body. Until that moment? She had actually looked happy. But now that she was alone in the kitchen to herself, she looked sad.
Considering his next move, Joel grasped tightly onto the railing of the stairway. Part of him thought he should go help her clean up. But he was never very good at that in the first place. It was one thing they used to bicker about when they were together. Joel always left dishes in the sink and his clothes all over the place. Which meant she was picking up after him all the time. They had more fights about it than he cared to admit.
Instead of helping, he let the other part of him win out and he started heading up the stairs. It was strange how even though he had been gone from the house four years, how much everything still felt like home. Y/N still decorated the same way. Just added a few more things here and there. Lights were wrapped around the railing leading up the stairs brightening the stairway. The photos were still up the way they were when they were together. With a few school photos added to the walls. The only ones that were down were the ones of their wedding or from when they were younger taking trips together.
The first bedroom on the right was Peterâs and he could hear the extensive shuffling. Standing in the doorway, Joel outstretched his arms and rest them against the doorframe, âYou need help there kid?â
âNo, I got it,â Peter insisted shoving a few of his clothes into his bag messily. âThanks though dad.â
âIâll check on your sister,â Joel pointed back toward Elizabethâs room and Peter waved his hand about. Going to move for Elizabethâs room, Joel backstepped when he saw the door to the room he used to share with Y/N was open. Looking to the stairs, Joel swallowed down hard and moved quietly into the bedroom. Even that didnât look any different. The only difference is that his things werenât thrown all over the place. His exercise equipment was gone along with his dresser. Instead there was a small sitting area there.
On the center of the bed was a robe that Joel assumed Y/N had been wearing earlier in the day. Reaching out, he caressed his fingers over the soft material before bringing it up to his nose to smell it. The scent of her perfume lingered over it and it made Joel smile. That was something he always loved. Her perfume. It had been a while since he had been close enough to her to actually smell it.
Setting the robe back on the bed, Joel looked to her dresser to see that two of the photos she had taken down that were originally in the hallway were now sitting on top of it. Stepping in closer to the dresser, Joel bit at his cheek when he saw the first one was their wedding photo. It was the two of them together with Elizabeth dressed in her flower girl outfit. Because they were just kids themselves, they had a backyard wedding at his parentsâ home, but they were happy enough at that time. They had each other and that was enough.
Placing that photo back, Joel reached for the photo of them on their last anniversary that they shared. Tommy had made them reservations that Tommy was really proud of at an expensive local restaurant. It was something that Tommy had saved up for as a thank you to them for all they did for him growing up. It was completely out of Joelâs scene. All throughout dinner he felt awkward. It was one of those places that had multiple courses already chosen for you. Since Tommy pre-paid for it, Joel forced himself through it, but he hated it. And he really let Y/N know how much he hated it. Having to dress up nice was not something that Joel enjoyed. He was uncomfortable the whole time. When they got home, Tommy had taken the photo of them. It was Joel sitting in a chair with Y/N in his lap while Joel was holding onto the gift she had gotten him. Y/N got him a really nice acoustic guitar that he had told her he wanted when they first started dating. It was something he would go to the store and play all the time. It was something she was really proud of. In the photo she looked really happy. And at that moment? She was.
It was after Tommy left when their fighting started again. Instead of appreciating the guitar that she got him, he told her to return it since it was stupid to waste the money. Especially since in the time that they had been together he had learned how to do wood carvings and he knew how to make acoustic guitars himself. Back then? He didnât understand the meaning behind the gesture. He just saw it as a waste of money. Especially since he lost out on his dreams of actually becoming a singer.
They also fought over the fact he bought her nothing other than flowers. Grand gestures were something that Y/N was big on. Even when they didnât have money, she always tried to do things special. That anniversary, he just bought her flowers and gave her them when he got home from work. She didnât complain, he just could see that she was disappointed. Which led to them fighting about her needing to be honest with him about things. That night they didnât get intimate together. Not once. It ended with him sleeping on the floor in Elizabethâs room.
The guitar put a big wedge between them because she told him if he hated the guitar he could return it to get the money back. Not wanting to look bad because it was a small town they lived in, Joel just let it sit and collect dust. Until they got separated and he took it with him. Now he played it occasionally and realized why she was upset because it was actually a really romantic gift.
It surprised him that she kept that photo considering how bad that night went. Setting the photo back where it was, Joel moved back over to the bed. Dropping back onto it had him staring up at the ceiling feeling an ache at his chest. Crawling over to the side of the bed that was his, Joel reached for her pillow and wrapped it up in his arms. Burying his face against it, he closed his eyes and realized how much more comfortable this whole set up actually felt than it did back at his place with Tommy.
After a few minutes, he forced himself to get up since he realized that it was probably creepy what he was doing. This wasnât his house anymore. It was just a vague memory of how things used to be. Thatâs it.
Leaving the room, he headed over to Elizabethâs room to see that she was sitting at her desk doing something on her laptop and he smirked. Leaning against the doorframe, he tipped his head to the side and cleared his throat causing her to jump.
âGetting in trouble?â Joel watched her shake her head when she showed him that she was writing her best friend in a chat. Taking a quick look, he sighed and moved over to her dresser to grab the softball that was there. Dropping back on her bed, he started throwing the ball up in the air catching it repeatedly.
âYou know, Peterâs not wrong. Things were better when it was the four of us,â Elizabeth stressed hearing her father sigh loudly and she shrugged her shoulders. âI donât see what the problem is. Youâre not with Tess anymore. So why not spend time with mom? Sheâs hot, right?â
âWhat?â Joel chuckled at his daughter saying that about her mother.
âListen, Iâve seen the moms at my school. I know mom is a catch,â she suggested to Joel hearing him laugh before going back to throwing the ball. âWhy donât you want to spend time with the four of us?â
âHey! I didnât see your mom jumping at the idea when Peter was talking about it,â Joel fumbled the ball, letting out a groan when it rolled across the floor. Pressing up onto his shoulder, Joel scoffed out when his eyes fell upon one of the posters that she had hanging up. It was one that was new and it made him roll his eyes. âI still canât believe youâve had a crush on that man since you were fourteen.â
âEveryone has celebrity crushes dad,â she looked back over her shoulder at the poster that he dramatically groaned over. Giving her father her attention back, she saw him throw his head back into the pillows.
âSure. But most girls your age have crushes on twinks from a boy band,â Joel declared hearing his daughter laugh at the description of the kind of boys that he thought she would like. âInstead, you like a professional baseball player thatâs my age. Do you know how creepy that is?â
âMost women here have a crush on Negan Smith,â she stood up from her chair to head over to point at the poster that was on the back of her door. âHeâs the hometown hero. Rookie of the year when he started. One of the greatest baseball players of our time.â
âDo you know how old you were when he won rookie of the year?â Joelâs eyebrow arched up in curiosity, dramatically turning his head to stare out at her. It had her cheeks flushing over with red and he let out a hesitant laugh. âI think I need to stress here that heâs my age.â
âYou were young when you had me,â she pointed out, heading over to the edge of her bed to sit down with him.
âNot that young,â Joel countered finding it creepy that his daughterâs celebrity crush was Negan Smith who was probably the most popular player for their stateâs professional baseball team. âWhat about that boyband kid that you liked when you were eight?â
Tipping his head back, Joel eyed over the magazine cutouts that she had plastered over her ceiling and he felt his heart skip a beat when his eyes fell onto one of the photos. Hopping up onto the bed had her gasping out when he snatched the photo from the collage of photos she had up there.
âThe hell is this?â Joelâs dark eyes almost seemed angry when he held the magazine page out in front of her face.
âUhm? Negan Smith?â Elizabeth flashed him an innocent smile with Joel looking over the photo. âIt was a photoshoot he did in order to bring attention to the sexism in sports magazines. It was him making a statement.â
âHeâs naked,â Joel sneered, looking over the photo. It had the baseball star holding a baseball glove over his groin and he had a baseball bat thrown over his shoulder. They had covered him in dirt and he had eye black under his eyes. âWhy in Godâs name do you have this photo over your bed? Why do you have this at all? Does your mother let you put these up here?â
âFirst of all, heâs not naked. Everything is covered,â she reached for the magazine pull out and he tugged it away from her. âSecond, mom doesnât know that thatâs there. She actually kind of gives me my privacy. So, there is that.â
âYouâre seventeen,â Joel scoffed looking over the pullout feeling like the room was spinning around him. âThis is way too sexual for you. I went to school with this guy. He was one of my best friends. This is another level of creepy.â
âDad, youâre being a little hypocritical. I know you and mom were having sex at my age. A magazine pull out is not the end of the world. Itâs not even porn,â Elizabeth fought back trying to reach for it, but Joel yanked it back away from her again. âI used my babysitting money to buy that dad. Itâs a few years old and itâs hard to find.â
âHow much did you pay for it?â Joel scoffed seeing the confusion in her eyes. âHow much?â
âLike thirty dollars,â she explained and he felt his blood boiling. âWhat?â
âThirty dollars for this?â Joelâs eyebrows furrowed and he grunted out looking it over. âCanât you just find a photo of it on the internet and print it out? Why waste the money?â
âBecause itâs authentic and an original. It would probably be worth more too because he just announced that he was retiring because of his most recent injury. Do you remember when that one guy purposely hurt him when we were watching that game?â she brought back a memory of when he was still living here and theyâd watch games together. âWell, he came back from that injury, but it still made his leg weak and he hurt it really bad. So bad that he has to retire. Heâs only doing one more season. People are going crazy over his stuff,â she reasoned with Joel who reached into his back pocket to pull out his wallet. Pulling out thirty dollars, he tossed it on the bed beside him and rolled up the poster causing her to gasp out. âYouâre going to bend it dad!â
âGood. It doesnât belong in myâŠâ Joel stopped realizing he was about to say it didnât belong in his house, but this wasnât his house anymore. âIt doesnât belong in my seventeen-year-old daughterâs bedroom. I paid you back for it. I donât care if itâs worth a hundred dollars. Spend your money on something better than some naughty ass photo of someone I used to be best friends with.â
âOh come on, all of thatâs bullshit dad,â she bickered with her father, throwing her hands up in the air and he dramatically shrugged his shoulders. âI know you say you two were best friends and I know you were on the same baseball team, but other than that? I think youâre pushing it with the best friend thing. If the two of you were best friends, why have I never met him? Why do I see no photos of the two of you together?â
âBecause in our last year of high school we kind ofâŠwent different ways,â Joel explained, still clinging onto the magazine pullout that he had stolen from his daughter. âHim, your mother, me and Uncle Tommy were the closest of friends. We were since I moved here. Honestly? I reckon he was probably better friends with your mother. But we all considered each other best friends. We were together all the time. And back then he didnât have a single tattoo on him.â
Joel reached up to pinch up at the bridge of his nose, âAnd as far as photos? We probably have loads of them upstairs in the attic. I can prove it right now. I still havenât cleaned out that thing since we moved in here and I doubt your mother did either because she always asked me to clean things up, but I didnât.â
âProve it,â she frowned, folding her arms in front of her chest reminding Joel of what he looked like when he was angry.
Urging her to follow him, Joel set the magazine pullout down on the table that was in the hallway. Out of the corner of his eye, he could see that Elizabeth was reaching for it and he snapped his fingers at her to get her to stop, âEllie! Donât think about it!â
âYou are so infuriating sometimes,â Elizabeth frowned realizing that she had officially lost part of her collage. Joel hopped up to pull at the hatch to get it opened and get the stairs down to go into the attic. Motioning her to go up first, Joel knew that if he turned his back on his daughter that she would likely grab what he had set aside. Color rushed into her face, her eyes rolling when she moved up the steps. Joel followed her not far behind. When they got up there, Elizabeth let out a dramatic cough and he huffed. âItâs dusty.â
âItâs not that bad,â Joel suggested taking a look around. A long time ago, Joel started to remodel the attic for Y/N, but he never finished it. Half of it was done and the other half just looked like a normal attic. Moving across the way, Joel cleaned off the bench that was at the far end where the nook he designed was. Holding his hand out, he motioned Elizabeth to take a seat. She eyed it over with disgust before slowly lowering down. âGive me a few minutes.â
âSo,â Elizabeth began, her curiosity growing while Joel started going through boxes. âWhat was he like when he was younger?â
âArrogant,â Joel stammered, his whole face scrunching up when he thought about Negan. âEveryone loved Negan. We were the two most popular guys in school by our senior year. He played baseball and basketball. I played baseball and football. We had a bit of a feud going on that last year. He was a smartass.â
âBut you were friends?â her eyebrow arched in curiosity. Pausing, Joel looked over his shoulder at his daughter. Taking a second to think it over, Joel nodded and cleared his throat. âWhat did you like about him?â
âHe was funny. He could really get under some of the teachersâ skin,â Joel responded, setting aside some of the boxes letting out a sigh when he dug through them. âHe was really smart. He could look at a book and just memorize everything. He was a class clown so it always infuriated the teachers when they tried to embarrass him and he would come back with the answer. Negan either had people really loving him or hating him because he was so good at reading people. He could have people eating out of the palm of his hand.â
Smirking, Joel opened one of the boxes to see on top of the box was some photos of him and Elizabeth when she was a baby. Holding out the photos, he saw her smile when she reached for the photos accepting them to look them over.
âMaybe Iâll come over here and finish the attic up for your mom. Clear up some things and go through the photos,â Joel offered appreciating the smile that Elizabeth was giving when she looked at the photos of them together. âItâs been a long time since I had a clean-shaven face.â
âYou look so young,â Elizabeth commented holding a photo up of Joel holding Elizabeth on his shoulders at a football game together. âYou were such a jock back then.â
âYeah, yeah,â Joel waved his hand in the air, getting down on the ground to make it easier for him to go through the boxes. After looking through a few boxes, Joel stopped when he found photos of Y/N and him from high school. With a smirk, he grabbed a handful of the photos of them at his prom. Holding them out to Elizabeth, he allowed her to look them over while he dug through the photos. When he realized this was the box that he wanted, he headed over to the bench to sit down beside her. âThat was a fun night.â
âPlease donât go into details,â Elizabeth groaned causing Joel to roll his eyes. âI know what happens on prom night.â
âI just mean we had a fun time at prom, then a few of the kids were throwing a party at their parentsâ house. It was right off the water, it was awesome,â Joel explained with a long sigh, his eyes narrowing when he cleared his throat. âIt was right before your grandparents passed away.â
Elizabeth gave Joel a sideways glance before continuing through the photos, smiling when she saw a photo of a young Joel kissing Y/N on the cheek with her mom laughing, âYou two looked so happy together.â
âWe were. We were so in love. All that mattered to me back then was her,â Joel admitted, his breathing growing uneven when he thought back to that time. âI just wanted to be with her all the time. I was afraid to let her go. I was supposed to be going off to college and she still had two more years left at school. I was so worried someone else was going to swoop in and take her. I guess the world solved that problem for me though. College was just never meant to happen.â
âYou still could have gone,â she thought aloud and it had Joel taking a moment to break from looking at the photos to gaze out at her. âYou could have. You had a full ride. You could have made it work. Mom eventually went to college.â
âI couldnât. I had to take care of Uncle Tommy or else he would have been put into the system. And then your mom got pregnant with you,â Joel recalled his younger years, shifting uneasily knowing that Y/N had been pregnant at seventeen which was how old Elizabeth was now. âI couldnât do that to Tommy. And I couldnât do that to you and your mom.â
It looked like Elizabeth wanted to say something, but she didnât. She just went back to looking at the photos. Seeing a photo of Negan training with him when they were on the baseball team, he handed it over to Elizabeth and she snickered.
âI know the two of you were on the team together dad. Iâve seen the team photo in the hallways of the high school,â she reminded her father hearing Joel grunt. âThat doesnât mean you were best friends. He looks so different without the facial hair.â
âNot as big of a babe,â Joel mocked the way a teenage girl would talk. It had her reaching out to hit him in the chest and he chuckled. âThat was before he got that scar on his face over his eyebrow.â
âYou know how he got that scar, right?â Elizabeth was eager to tell the story, but Joel hushed her.
âEveryone knows that story. He told it all the time when he first started becoming popular,â Joel pointed out feeling a bit of jealousy at how much this town loved Negan Smith. Stopping on one of the photos, he tossed it to Elizabeth and heard the surprised sound that followed. It was a photo of him, Negan and Y/N sitting on the couch that was in his parentsâ basement. A young Tommy was laid out across their lap and they were all laughing. âTold you. Thatâs at your grandparentsâ home.â
Noticing that all the photos were starting to include Negan, Joel handed piles of photos to her and could see the awe that came from her looking at the photos, âSee. Iâm not a liar. Iâve always been a very honest person.â
âHoly shit,â she held up a photo of Joel and Negan together. Negan had his arm wrapped around Joelâs shoulders. Negan was curling his lip up in a ridiculous pose with Joel wearing a backwards baseball cap. Elizabeth clung to the photo before reaching for the next. It was a photo of Y/N between both Joel and Negan. Both of them were kissing her cheek and it had Elizabeth laughing. âSo many people would be jealous of mom with this one.â
âYeah, I know. I was really cute,â Joel knew that Elizabeth was talking about Negan, but he was being a smart ass. Elizabeth rolled her eyes before continuing through the photos. There were a lot of photos of Y/N and Negan which had Elizabeth shocked. There was an extremely young photo of Negan and Y/N that was in that box leaving Joel to shrug when Elizabeth held it up. âI told you those two were closer. Negan was my age, but they knew each other pretty much her whole life. They were neighbors. Together all the time.â
âWhy doesnât mom talk about him?â Elizabeth stammered, stopping on a photo of her mom sitting on Neganâs lap with her arms wrapped around his shoulders.
âUhm,â Joel considered what to say next before clearing his throat. âBecause when he stopped talking to me, he stopped talking to her. The woman he ended up getting married to showed up at the school the last year. Really pretty girl. Negan was hooked on her. Your mother wanted him to be your godfatherâŠâ
âNo shit,â she gasped, clinging to the photo of Negan with her mother. âWhat the hell happened? Could you imagine if Negan Smith was my godfather?â
âHe just stopped interacting with the two of us all together. Your mother tried to reach out to him multiple times, but then she just stopped trying,â Joel cleared his throat, rubbing at the side of his face before sighing loudly. âI think it hurt too much, so she just wrote him off. Didnât want to think about it since the two of them were so close.â
âHow did I never know this?â Elizabeth seemed upset that this was a part of her parentsâ lives that she didnât know. âSo you just were friends with Negan Smith?â
âYeah. When your Uncle Tommy and I moved to town, there was this boy that kept picking on your Uncle Tommy. All the time. He was smaller for his age. It was during the summer and this boy would knock him off his bike. Push him down. Do what bullies do. One day, I was outside and I saw this boy hit your Uncle Tommy. Your mother and Negan were outside playing hockey. We all saw it happen. I was heading over to whoop the bullyâs ass, but she beat me to it. Hit the boy with the hockey stick that she had. Then she beat his ass,â Joel explained with a laugh mimicking a few punches drawing Elizabeth to laugh. âShe kicked that boyâs ass so bad that he refused to tell his parents. He didnât want the whole school knowing that he had his ass kicked by a girl. But yeah, youâre mother had a crush on me from the first moment I met her, but Iâm pretty sure that day is the day she fell in love with me. That was the day we first started hanging out.â
âShe fell in love with you? Not the other way around?â she was surprised to hear that and Joel tipped his head from side to side. âHow couldnât you fall in love with her after that?â
âShe kind of scared the shit out of me, but in a good way,â Joel claimed, his hand placing in over the center of his chest. âSo yes. For your mother it was love at first sight. For me? It took until I was about seventeen.â
âWhat are you two doing up here?â a voice made them both jump and they looked to the stairs to see that Y/N was moving into the attic.
âYour daughter has like the biggest crush ever on Negan Smith,â Joel once again teased his daughter, talking in a stereotypical way that had her pushing into Joelâs chest. A loud laugh fell from his throat when he pointed toward the photos. âShe didnât believe that we were best friends back in the day. So I had to prove it.â
âWhyâd you never tell me?â Elizabeth was curious when Y/N moved forward to look at the photo that Elizabeth had of her with Negan and Joel kissing her cheeks. âIâve had the biggest crush on him forever and you never said anything.âÂ
âIt was a long time ago,â she reasoned, shrugging her shoulders as Joel started pulling himself up from the bench that he was seated on with Elizabeth. Talking about Negan didnât seem to appeal much to her when she waved her hand about. âI have all the cookies packed up and I made a pie the other day that Iâm sending with you.â
âHow I remained skinny when we were together blows my mind. I like your food way too much,â Joel reached down to pat his stomach realizing now that he was older, it was harder to stay in shape for him. âCome on Ellie. We have to get home. Uncle Tommy is probably waiting.â
Elizabeth didnât really want to, but she accepted her fatherâs hand when he helped her up. They moved down the stairs and onto the second level. Joel had Elizabeth going back to her room for her stuff before reaching for the poster he snatched from Elizabethâs room. Handing it out to Y/N had her looking down and unrolling the photo. Once she realized what it was, her eyes grew wide.
âI guess her and her mother have the same type,â Joel sneered and it had Y/N lifting her eyes up at Joel slowly. âThat was on her wall. Our daughter should never have anything like that on her wall. Maybe pay a little more attention to the things that she is getting her hands on.â
âYes sir,â Y/N almost seemed offended when she rolled the photo back up and felt a warmth flooding into her face. The look that Joel gave her almost looked angry, but she couldnât say anything else because the two children were walking out with their bags.
Seeing them out to say her goodbyes, Y/N cleaned things up before heading back upstairs. Noticing that the stairs were still pulled out for the attic, Y/N went to close them up before thinking things over. Going up into the attic, she headed over toward the box of photos. Lowering down on the bench that Joel and Elizabeth were on earlier. Pushing through the photos, there was a sense of sadness that ate her up inside seeing some of her photos of when she was pregnant with Elizabeth. Joel was so loving and sweet back then. And he looked so happy. Stopping on a photo had her heart racing. In that pile was a photo of a much younger version of her and Negan kissing. Clearing her throat, she pushed the photo into her back pocket. That was the last thing her daughter should be seeing and she knew that.
Closing up the attic, she headed to bed and pulled out the photo she snatched along with the magazine pull out that Joel had given her. Taking a look at it, she shook her head and tossed both of them into the top drawer of her dresser. For so long Y/N had pushed away her past. It almost felt like she had forgotten her past. Right now, she was just living and working to get through every day. And that was enough.

Obligatory âI donât have a problem with CaitViâ but I think, for me, their story (separate from their own personal character arcs) would/will be more compelling if it ends up being irreparable between them.
I think Arcane is good at subverting expectations and tropes; the most memorable example I can think of is in S1E3 where Powder follows after Vi and the boys to save Vander. Weâve all seen the âfriends are in trouble, but the plucky young hero comes in at the nick of time to save them against all oddsâ plot twistâbut Arcane subverts that. In fact, Powderâs involvement and her monkey bomb finally working is the thing that, tragically, leads to Claggor and Myloâs death, Viâs injury, Vanderâs death(?), so on and so forth. It worked, but it didnât work. And to me, that's the tragedy of it. That good intentions weren't enough.
So, personally, I see a setup between Caitlyn and Vi: the Romeo and Juliet archetype, two initially-begrudging people working together amongst classism and prejudice, and finding companionship against all odds. Class, wealth, opportunity separates them; Caitlyn is a scion of one of Piltoverâs most influential and powerful families, and Vi is⊠a nobody from the Undercity, wrongfully imprisoned, when they first meet. Itâs a way for them to both see that the âother sideâ isnât as bad as theyâve always been told. That there are Good People on either side of the bridge. That, hell, love can be found, too.
But oftentimes, I believe this trope in particular ignores a lot of the real-world factors that could come into play with a friendship or relationship that âdefiesâ station. The fact is, Caitlyn does come from a world of privilege, and Vi is treated differently by Caitlynâs peers. The whole of Season two, Vi has been referred to as one of the âgood onesâ. Maddie explicitly says that it's good to know that there are still "good ones" around. The implication that youâre not like them. Time and time again, Vi is treated like an Other. A âgoodâ other, but an other all the same. She's welcome in Piltover, but only just - and only when Caitlyn vouches for her. And at the climax of their story thus far, Caitlyn outright says to her, âI keep telling myself that you're different. but you're not. It's [Jinx's] blood in your veinsâ. I'm sure grief and anger are a part of why she says this, but that's becoming a catalyst for the discrimination she seems to be steadily believing in more and more. Whether or not she ends up meaning this, it's a ghastly thing to say.
And with the way things are developing with Caitlyn, who is actively weaponizing her privilege and power, and who is very quickly going down a very dangerous and fascist path, I donât know if their relationship could â or should! â be rectified. She's a cop, and a very privileged one at that. I donât know if this is a love that could âdefy all oddsâ, and in my opinion, I think it would be more interesting, and more compelling, if it didnât.

I would *love* to see the genderbent version of the Baby Fever / "Impregnate me now!" post. Depending on the Monkey, it could be the Queen herself rather than the S/O asking for a baby
Ohhhhhhhhhh I agree on the queen part, yes indeedđđđ
(Lmk Wukong) You have been giving her baby fever for a long time, for years you had tended to no only the baby monkeys FFM but also to Mk, Mei and for some reason Redson. Your like another father to them, a scary one but well not as scary as pigsy but your Definitely much stricter then him as you push Mk a bit to do better things Mostly for her own good. One day she and Mk lost you at that Mall, and the found you comforting a crying girl who got lost from her mother. She cried and hid her face in your chest, and you wrapped you jacket around her she was immediately comforted as she called you baba feeling safe with you while you spoke with mall security. Yup that was the final straw..........
(Wukong) Mk their's something I need to tell My husband
Back At FFM
(Wukong) IMPREGNATE ME AT ONCE!!!!!!
(Male Y/n)HUUUUHHHH?!?!?!?!?đłđłđłđ„”đ„”đ„”
(NR Wukong) I doubt she would get baby fever on the fly, but you do things that may build up to it. Like it's one thing for you to take Care of Li as you treat her like a daughter and treating Her boyfriend Stu like a son. What stranger is that you do the same for Their friends as well, even spoiled rich girl Ao bing wasn't safe from your fathering. Wukong finally asked what has gotten into you lately, that's when you told her that you wanted a baby cub. You told her, when a lost boy had mistaken you as his father and even when you found his real father, he still wouldn't stop calling you baba and you felt strange ever sinceđŁ. Wukong jaw dropped her husband got baby fever and he doesn't even know, well then...........
(Wukong) F*CK ME!!!!!!đ€€đ„”
(Male y/n)...........................Now I normally would but I feel like it's different this timeđłđŠ
(HIB Wukong) Ohhhhhhhhhh boi you make her ovaries explode every second of every day. I mean, they did that when she first met you, and you kept doing that now. You take care of silly boy the most making sure he stays out of trouble, and make sure to groom Luier and take care of her hair. When Wukong saw that she was down for the count, then you delt the final blow when you were called baba by both the kids and some other children in the village who saw you as a father figure. Wukong couldn't take it anymore
(Wukong) cubs, cubs, Cubs CUBS!!!!! I WANT MORE CUBSđ„”đ„”đ„”đ„”đ„”đ„”
(Male y/n) WUKONG PLEASE WE'RE IN PUBLIC!!!!!đŁđł
(MKR Wukong) She would never know she had baby fever until its to late for her, like it's was one thing for fruity to address you as baba and you don't have an opinion on it. Then she sees it everywhere you guys go together, whether it be a small boy who needs his ball back from a tree, or a little girl who sad that her plushie ripped and you sat there and sew it back to together. Then what shocked Wukong was how you got lots of rebellious teenagers to open up and vent alot easier then the monk and even their own parents did. Wukong was admittedly impressed with your quirks, but the blow was a mother struggling with her baby and you took the baby boy from her and he immediately stopped crying as you spoke sofly to him.
(Wukong) I.....I think I wanna babyđłđłđł
(Male Y/n) Yeah, I'll do that in a minute hunđđđ
(Netflix Wukong) Now I see her baby fever being caused by her lack their of a family growing upđ„ She was all alone for most of her youth until you made it better. Well then she met dragon king, and Lin and finally you, the village weirdo although you were completely unorthodox you were kind, patient and supportive. You never judged her and for that she fell in love with you, but lately she's been feeling a bit hollow like something is missing until she saw what it was. You were playing with the village children, from making up games, and drawing and making snacks for them. Wukong eyes Widened at the care you give to them, and so it clicked she knew what was missing.
(Wukong) Y/n...I want a babyđ„ș
(Male y/n) ABOUT TIME I wasn't doing all the fatherly stuff for NO reasonđđ
(BMW Wukong) You were always quite rough around the edges and that's what she like about you, but what she didn't know what about your baby fever. It was a bit before she met you and you were hired to watch over a celestials child for a few days, and you turned out to be more of a father then the girls really that which broke your heart then you met your wife. You never brought it up to her in fear of you would come off as pressuring her, but your wife was smarter and more aware then you thought.
(Wukong) Ohhhhhhhhhh Y/n, how do you feel about cubs
(Male Y/n) I would like that, but I hope you know their might be more than one at the first tryđđđ
(Wukong)..........what do you mean by thatđłđłđłđłđł
(Destined one) Ok, so you were acting strange lately. She's been noticing how you like to lay on her stomach at all times while slightly whimpering. She felt your hollow feelings and mild depression and it's been going on for a while. When the destined one asked what was wrong, you just told her that something was missing. That when you and your wife had separate experiences, she had saved a young child from another demon who wanted to eat her, and the little clung on to her for safety while in the village you had tended to a crying little girl who scraped her knees and you put a Bandage on it making her smile and you both figured out what was missing.
(Destined one) IMPREGNATE ME AT ONCE!!!đ«đ«đ«
(Male Y/n) I WANNA A BABY MONKEY CUB!!!!!!đ€©đ€©đ€©
(Both) WAIT REALLY?!?!?!?đłđłđł

Sometimes I think about how much Mettaton (specifically in Undertale) and Spamton are foils to each other and it drives me perhaps a bit insane.
Like... Mettaton had the drive to go see the light of day on the surface, to be with humans and be a savior to monsterkind, and was willing to kill a kid to get there. He wanted to be more than a simple snail farmer and had Alphys there to help him build a new body. He, whether intended or not, abandoned family & friends to live out his dream.
Spamton is also more than willing to kill to get to see the light, he wants to be more than a darkner in a dark world, and abandons his friends to be [big] without them, relying only on the help of some strange benefactor until he also is abandoned.
They both can be self absorbed, their visages plastered around all the stuff they own (or owned). They can be inconsiderate of others. They have dreams of being big stars. There is no subtext with MTT figuring out his identity and his transitioning; its all plain to see. While it's more subtle for Spam, there are themes of self identity with him, too.
I think the biggest difference in their personalities is that Mettaton can be a lot more humble. Despite Burgerpants' treatment and taking Alphys for granted, a lot of the monsters in the MTT hotel do speak fondly of him, especially if he dies and you go back through the hotel afterward. He doesn't resist talking to Napstablook when they call in, even though he probably feels guilty for leaving them behind for whatever reason he did. He clearly still loves his cousin, and does appreciate his friendship with Alphys.
Meanwhile Spamton lies to himself about being better off without the Addisons. Deep down he doesn't mean it, but coming to terms with the reality of his feelings? Naw. He's probably had to use this tough guy persona to shield himself from criticism in his big shot days and now doesn't know how to take the mask off without it hurting. There's a lot of denial in his small body, not helped by the years of scraping by in back alleys after his fall.
Though, if the roles were reversed, would things have played out differently? Mettaton has the benefit of well-meaning people around him and luck. Its through shuffling around the trash zone that he met someone who could make his dream body come true, and who ALSO had ties to the king of the Underground. Spamton has... fairweather friends? We don't know for sure how close he was to the Addisons, or how much he thinks of his relationship with Swatch in his grander days, or how benevolent the person on the phone really was.
Yes, there was desperation to get to the surface for MTT, but he didn't have to deal with the mind-breaking information of how radically different and free the light world is when you live a deterministic existence. He didn't have to deal with seeing a soul as a blinding beacon within a kid's body. I doubt Metta wouldn't be overly obsessed with the light world, nor doubt Spamton wouldn't be content with his place in life, if they swapped shoes.
It's also so WILD that they don't know each other in the DR universe, but Mettaton had a profound impact on Spamton just by making his a little art file. He unknowingly is the one who gives this spam email a glimpse into world above, and possibly a piece of his own hopes and dreams as well. I wonder if later the DR Mettaton, too, will be affected in some way by Spamton.
#yotie yaps#and boy do I freaking yap#this has probably been all said before but I like to make small essays about them#side note I did have an au about UT MTT and Spam swapping roles post game/chapter from the player doiing some fuckshit#and only Kris and Frisk are aware of it and need to get things back to normal. but then I did nothing with it except some silly concepts#bc i had no way to make it make sense. the gap between their universes was too big for me

Will Stolas lose his immortality?
Iâve seen several mentions of Mission: Weeaboo-boo being a parallel to Blitzâs first encounter with Stolas (as an adult), which I can totally get behind. Right out the gate we have the âyou were here to ravish meâ similarity as well as Blitz âsneaking in, under the cover of night.â
I've also seen the hypothesis that Emberlynn's fan fiction includes an element of foreshadowing for whatâs going to happen in the climax of Season 2.
Her episode is also the only one of the shorts with that "ticking" sound during the content warning, which lends further credence to the idea that it is tied in with the main plot somehow, even if merely thematically.
This got me pondering the possible parallels related to Emberlynn's functional immortality against demonkind and her decision to give it up in order to "be with Blitz."
Which now has me wonderingâis Stolas going to have to give up his immortality to be with Blitz? Or lose it due to the illegal arrangement they've had going on?
Or, leaning into the idea that her episode is merely a reflection of how Blitz views his relationship with Stolas, could it simply be a parallel to the fact that Stolas has already been in mortal danger as a result of choosing to be with Blitz? And that Blitz feels responsible for Stolas' âundoing?â
Weâre shown in Ghostfuckers that one of Blitzâs fears is that Millie could have died during any of the missions from episodes 1-4 of season one. Couple that with the fact that he believes that he âmakes everyoneâs lives worse,â itâs reasonable to assume that he not only fears, but feels responsible for her life being in mortal danger during their missions.
Whether he cared more about Stolas or the arrangement when he stopped the first assassination attempt, Striker was without the angelic weapon when he fled, which Moxxie had expressed complete shock in Striker's ability to have in the first place.
I think that Blitz allowed his cognitive dissonance to convince himself that Striker was no longer a threat without this weapon. Because deep down, he may have been afraid that telling Stolas about the assassination attempt might not be a neutral event for him. That he didnât even want to contemplate the idea that he might actually care beyond the loss of their "arrangement."
In the very next episode, Truth Seekers, we see these feelings forced to the surface during his drug-induced hallucinationâwith Stolas at the top of a long flight of stairs, saying, âAre you afraid to love people, Blitzy?â
With the knowledge that heâs afraid that he makes âeveryoneâs lives worse,â it adds layers to many Stolitz scenes that follow throughout the series. Data points that someone like Blitz could easily see as evidence of that very fear. âProofâ that heâs responsible for Stolasâ life âfalling apart.â
- He knew that Stolas was married as evidenced by his âSorry, I fucked your husbandâ after their first night together. Stolas was clearly not only consenting to sex with Blitz, but was expressing a joyous desperation for it. Despite this, it was actually the âfirst ever friendâ comment that caused Blitz to hesitate and return to Stolas, which we now know was a soft spot for him due to his experience with Fizz. But it was Blitzâs choice to stay or go, and staying is what kicked off the arrangement, is the reason for the sexual nature of its terms, and caused a domino effect that impacted Stolasâ entire life, including his family.
- When the two of them were being roasted at Ozzieâs, it wasnât Stolasâ perspective that was showcased for Blitz, but Ozzie and Wally Wackfordâs. Not only does the narrative begin early with Wallyâs âAre you sleeping with an imp?!â but itâs followed up by Ozzieâs âMy dark lord, how the mighty do fall,â and continues with Stolas being called out for âgiving upâ his wife and daughter specifically for his choice to be with Blitz. And the way that the narrative plays out, it almost sounds like his downfall was less for cheating than it was for sleeping with an imp.
Either way, seeing Stolas hide his face behind the menu likely âconfirmedâ multiple things for Blitz. That despite Stolasâ âpublicâ flirting in front of other imps, when confronted by someone actually associated with Stolasâ upper class society, Blitz was reduced to being an embarrassment for Stolas.
Believing that, left no room for even a glimmer of hope that they could be anything more than what they already were: a prince who enjoyed âsleeping with an impâ and was apparently paying a pretty steep price for it.
- Then thereâs Octavia. In Loo Loo Land, Stolas takes her to the theme park but spends most of his time flirting with Blitz. Not only does she comment on this in front of Blitz, but heâs there to witness when sheâs finally had enough and storms off, mad at her father. In Seeing Stars, Octavia came to I.M.P., stole the grimoire, and disappeared with it. Why? Because her father was so wrapped up in the divorce, that she felt angry and neglected.
- In Full Moon, his fight with Stolas took them through part of the palace. This is very likely the first time heâs seen it since he was apprehended at the âNot Divorcedâ party, and what has it become? When he came back into Stolasâ life, it was bright, vibrant, and full of people. That night in Full Moon, it was dark, muted, and the only person visible in his photos were of Via.
While Blitz may have inferred at the time that Stolasâ marriage wasnât in a good place, he doesnât know just how miserable Stolas was in the life he had before. From Blitzâs perspective, he may have appeared fairly content overall when they first reconnected.
Compare that to Apology Tour, which Blitz sees as the natural outcome of what people experience when they are around him long enough.
Data point after data point, to feed into the idea that Stolasâ life has been âruined,â just by Blitz being in it. His marriage ended, his relationship with his daughter was negatively impacted, and by Ghostfuckers, someone had tried to kill him twice.
I don't think Blitz is aware that Stella is the one who has been putting out the hits, but I could see him internalizing the idea that if Stolas had died during the second attempt, it would have been his fault. Because not only had he chosen not to warn Stolas that someone was trying to assassinate him, he was also the person that Stolas had reached out to for help and he had let M&M go in his stead.
It is after this attempt on Stolasâ life that we see Blitz absolutely shook by the idea that Stolas not only could be hurt, but that he was hurt and had almost died.
This is also several months after the night at Ozzieâs, when he had first begun to realize that, painful as it was, he may care for Stolas after all. Months during which they hadnât seen each other and he had time to actually miss their time together.
Between that and finding out that he can actually get hurt, I can see Stolas becoming one of the people that Blitz feels the desire to protect. Unfortunately, this also seems to come with the anxiety of being responsible for what he perceives as the âcollateral damageâ of being associated with him.
Finally, in Truth Seekers, where the "ticking" began, Stolas had exposed himself via "real" demonic power to the D.H.O.R.K.S. and by extension, the living world. But the only reason he was there and got himself caught on camera is because he came to rescue Blitz.
This could be linked to the scene where we see Blitz attempting to protect and defend Stolas against someone. My bet is on Paimon, who, while ranking below the 7 Sins in power, is still depicted as a fairly powerful being. Stolas had not only exposed their existence to the living world, but had showcased his power in his attempt to scare the agents into submission. We know thereâs going to be consequences for that, as well as for the divorce, and I expect Paimon will have a part to play, one way or another.
Stolas mentioned in Seeing Stars that without the grimoire, his powers are rather limited. I assumed that the worst outcome for him at the end of Season 2 was being stripped of his status and grimoire, which would vastly reduce his raw power as well as the power his position in society affords him.
Obviously, the actual worst-case scenario would be the loss of his life, which it's assumed Blitz is trying to protect him from in the snippet from the trailer. But it didn't occur to me until now that even with my own certainty that he'll survive the Season 2 climax, there was a third possible outcome... that along with his power and status, Stolas could also be stripped of his immortality.

Sorry, but can I just stress something about Louis that drives me insane?Â
In his route where you've saved him, he kills Dorian. Louis directly kills another person. He shot her with a crossbow through the mouth.
Itâs unavoidable.Â
Sure, itâs considered an accident, and even so, it was also self-defenseâDorian sure wasnât there for a friendly chat, after all.Â
But here's the thing... of the Ericson crew, we know that Clementine, AJ, and Marlon have killed someone. And Minerva if you want to count her, too, since she once was part of the group . But the others? Maybe they have killed before and we just donât know about it, whether it be out of mercy or self-defense.
Violet in her route had the chance to kill Minerva, but understandably, she didnât. She opted to shoot her in the shoulder instead⊠but we never see her kill anyone herself.Â
Maybe you could count indirect kills because of the bag of bricks/log that kills Yonatan, and maybe you could consider Mitchâs death as indirectly Tennâs fault⊠Speaking of Mitch, he tried to kill Lilly, but we all saw how that turned out, didn't we?Â
âŠbut Louis? He killed Dorian. That was his first kill. His first.Â
And he feels awful about it! He apologizes to the body as it lays warm at his feet! Heâs shaking and can barely speak!! It feels like bile! He doesn't even have time to process it because uh oh, the boat's going to explode!
But heâs also been so hardened over the season by everything thatâs happened to him that he comes out of it glad that he has it in him to kill because if thatâs what it takes to protect Clementine, AJ, and his family and home, then heâll do it even if he doesnât want to.
How does that not drive anyone else utterly mad?
Fandom considers him the funny guy! He's cute and silly! He makes Clementine laugh!
He's also done murder! He's taken a life! Just like Clementine and AJ have! Just like Marlon did!
And honestly, I think this also leads to him forgiving AJ for killing Tenn because at this point, he understands. He hates it, and he wishes it didnât have to be this way, but he gets that AJ saw something that he didnât. Louis knows that AJâs hurting just as much as he is, he even says as much if Clementine says anything other than âAJ saved your lifeâ on the bridge.Â
He relived Marlonâs death when Tenn died, but itâs not like his hands are clean, either⊠and neither were Marlonâs. Clementineâs hands definitely arenât clean.Â
It drives me crazy that best friends Louis and Marlon have each killed someone in TFS but Marlon killed Brody in a moment of panic because heâs a coward who wanted hide what he did while Louis killed Dorian in a moment of panic because he was trying to save Clementine from Minerva and she came up behind him like⊠hhhhnnnnggggggggg, yâknow?
Oh, and don't even get me started on the clouis aspect of this because I'll lose it. He talks to her about it because he knows she'll understand, just like how she's always understood him. How he goes out of his way to tell her that having a home means protecting it and he's going to protect it [that home being her, AJ, and Ericson] no matter what because he wants to build this new life with her aaaaaaaaaaaaaand I've lost itâ

I hate the convos about "passing" but I do think it's something that a lot of us in the LGBTQ+ community need to think about with the threat of a second Trump administration looming - that those of us who don't fit into certain experiences that are going to be more attacked, who are less "visibly" queer are going to be safer, and should use that relative privilege to take care of the people in our community who are more vulnerable. But I don't think that this falls along the old online discourse lines. Like, yeah, cis bi people who are in long-term F/M marriages or relationships are, as a class, going to be a lot safer right now than a lot of others in our community, particularly if they're relatively gender-conforming. An aroace woman who doesn't date or have sex is going to be better off than a lot of women of all sexualities given what Trump-Vance plan to do to abortion rights and also just like, lifesaving care if someone miscarries. But like.... the same is true for me as a single, childless cis lesbian (who isn't particularly butch or otherwise would be pegged immediately by heterosexual cis people as queer). And all of this is very relative. A, say, "passing" binary trans person will likely be safer than someone who doesn't pass but all trans people are at risk. All LGBTQ+ people are at risk if we lose employment protections on the federal level or something worse. Including that het married bi person, if they're out to anyone who could rat them out.... and like, some people might poo-poo it as "well that's small potatoes" but is it really? Everybody should be able to be out, and people who don't otherwise "seem" queer being out creates more acceptance for everyone. Everybody should be able to just like, talk about their relationships and crushes and history of them in passing without having to worry about losing their job over it! This sucks for everybody. But idk.... as someone who is relatively privileged within the LGBTQ+ community myself, I feel like there is a convo we could probably and should have about relative privilege within the community, but it's just been spoiled by this attitude of using it to declare people as more or less queer and otherwise invalidate everyone's identities and experiences. And to act like the people who are relatively privileged are wholly privileged and don't have any struggle, as keeps happening with how people talk about oppression on this website (e.g. acting like white women aren't "for reals oppressed" like misogyny isn't a humongous problem and particularly in the U.S. considering that like, the country has twice now decided they'd rather have a rapist felon than a competent, brilliant, highly qualified woman for president, and of course the terror of Project 2025 staring down every woman, whether attacks on reproductive health for cis women and other AFAB people or attacks on trans rights and healthcare for trans women)
The other thing is that there are other examples of "relative privilege" that aren't something you can discern from someone's identity label or how they present themselves to the world. Stuff like having an accepting family, being in a profession or social group, or a relatively liberal and accepting part of the world. I've got accepting family and friends (who themselves are mostly queer too), live in a blue state, am in a very pro-LGBTQ+ profession that is full of LGBTQ+ people (academia/arts). The het-partnered bi person who has a homophobic family and friend network and who is in a conservative area and profession is in a way more precarious position than I am.
Also, the focus should not be on kicking anyone out of the community or making ranks of oppressedness, but instead on building community - and finding ways that those of us who are relatively privileged can help those who are not. How cis LGB people can help trans people. How people with more accepting families and friends can help those who don't. How people with more money can reach out to people who don't who are at risk of losing access to hormones. How people with legal backgrounds can help same-sex couples who worried about their marriage being invalidated or losing their kids. I had a friend in grad school who came out as a trans man and his parents rejected him, so my family invited him to stay with us for Thanksgiving and holidays. And the same goes in reverse. Finding someone who is very vocal about calling themselves "queer" who seems safer and more privileged than you shouldn't be cause to yell at them for it, but to recognize them as a potential lifeline for you if things go south. Reaching out in solidarity rather than condemnation is good for everyone.

Blue zones
THE BLUE ZONE OF SARDINIA
Sardinia, an Italian island in the Mediterranean Sea, is home to one of the world's five Blue Zones, areas where people live notably longer and healthier lives. Centenarians here embody a lifestyle rooted in deep traditions that promote longevity.
Diet
The Sardinian diet is primarily plant-based, with an emphasis on local, seasonal produce.
Vegetables, fruits, and legumes like beans are staples of daily meals.
Whole grains such as barley and wheat, along with chestnuts, are common sources of nutrition.
Fish, particularly from the local waters, is consumed moderately, while red meat is a rare treat.
Olive oil, known for its health benefits, is the primary fat used, providing essential omega-3 fatty acids.
A notable element of the Sardinian diet is the use of pecorino, a sheepâs milk cheese rich in omega-3s.
Drinking moderate amounts of red wine, especially the local Cannonau, has been linked to heart health, owing to its high levels of antioxidants.
Social connections
Sardiniaâs Blue Zone is also marked by its tight-knit communities. Social connections are a crucial part of daily life. Families often live in close proximity, and regular gatherings with relatives and friends provide emotional support and a sense of purpose. Sardinians frequently engage in communal activities, such as celebrating traditional festivals and enjoying meals together. This strong sense of belonging and emotional engagement is thought to reduce stress and promote mental health, playing a significant role in their longevity.
Physical activity
The Sardinians donât hit the gym, but they are naturally active throughout their daily lives. Walking is the primary form of transportation, and the hilly terrain encourages movement. Additionally, many are still engaged in traditional forms of work, such as farming and shepherding, which require physical labor. The elderly, in particular, continue walking long distances and remain active in their rural villages, often maintaining an active lifestyle well into their 90s. This regular physical activity, coupled with a low level of sedentary behavior, helps keep their cardiovascular systems in check and supports overall mobility.
Spirituality
Religion and spirituality play important roles in the Sardinian Blue Zone. The majority of Sardinians belong to the Catholic faith, and their religious practices are deeply intertwined with their sense of purpose. Attending church services and participating in religious festivals provide a rhythm to life, helping individuals feel connected to something larger than themselves. This spiritual engagement provides meaning and fosters resilience, both of which are essential for a long and fulfilling life.
Strong sense of family and purpose
The importance of family cannot be overstated. In Sardinia, family bonds are cherished, with elders often living in the same home or close by. Elders continue to feel needed, whether by caring for grandchildren or maintaining family traditions. This strong sense of purpose gives them a reason to stay active and involved, which may help explain their longevity. Having a role within the family, whether as a mentor or as someone to care for, provides a profound sense of fulfillment and contributes to emotional well-being.
